Tensions flared in Berhampore, West Bengal, as Congress candidate Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury encountered obstruction from Trinamool Congress workers during an election campaign. Chowdhury, vying for the Berhampore assembly seat, faced resistance while campaigning in Ward No. 19, leading to a confrontation between supporters of both parties. The situation escalated with slogans and a scuffle before police intervention restored order.
Allegations of deliberate campaign disruption were exchanged, with Chowdhury accusing Trinamool Congress of instigating violence out of fear of election outcomes. Trinamool leaders, however, refuted the claims, accusing Chowdhury of inciting unrest by involving outsiders in the campaign. Both parties are expected to lodge complaints with the Election Commission following the incident.
The confrontation follows a previous incident where Trinamool workers reportedly heckled Chowdhury with “go back” slogans. Amidst escalating tensions, the Congress party, contesting all 294 Assembly seats independently in Bengal, released its candidate list, positioning Chowdhury prominently in the electoral fray.
