Criminal activities are on the rise in Bihar, with thieves now focusing on high-value commercial establishments in urban areas. In a bold move, thieves recently looted jewelry valued at nearly ₹26.9 lakh from a shop in the upscale New Market area of Katihar. The theft, which occurred around 2 a.m. on Wednesday, involved stealing silver and gold ornaments.
The stolen items included approximately 8 kilograms of silver, 16 grams of gold ornaments, and 3.7 grams of pure gold. The criminals also targeted a nearby garment shop, adding to the total theft amount. The incident was discovered in the morning when shopkeepers noticed the broken shutters, leading to panic in the market.
Authorities have taken action by forming a Special Investigation Team (SIT) under the supervision of SDPO Sadar-1. The police are currently examining CCTV footage from the area to gather more information. The theft has sparked concerns about security in what was previously considered a safe part of the city.
Katihar Superintendent of Police (SP) Shikhar Choudhary confirmed the incident and announced the suspension of two police personnel responsible for night patrolling. The suspended officers failed to report for duty and inform their superiors, leading to their suspension due to negligence. The affected shop owner expressed shock over the theft, emphasizing the need for a thorough investigation and increased security measures.
Local traders and residents are calling for the swift arrest of the culprits and improved night patrolling to prevent similar incidents in the future.
