Thol Thirumavalavan, the president of Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), has decided not to run for the Kattumannarkoil Assembly constituency in the upcoming 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. Thirumavalavan cited recent developments and alliance dynamics as reasons for his withdrawal, emphasizing his long-term goal of representing marginalized communities.
Having served two years as a Member of Parliament, Thirumavalavan expressed his desire to advocate for the oppressed in the Assembly. Throughout his political career, he has prioritized public welfare over personal ambition, demonstrating a commitment to collective leadership by stepping aside in the past to create opportunities for others.
Thirumavalavan refuted claims that he was eyeing the Deputy Chief Minister’s position or strategically positioning himself for a potential hung Assembly. He denounced these allegations as unfounded attacks on his political integrity, aimed at undermining the alliance’s strength. The VCK leader clarified that his party’s decision to field new candidates in general constituencies was a conscious choice.
In a move to quell speculation, Thirumavalavan announced Jyothimani, the son of former leader Ilayaperumal, as the VCK’s candidate for Kattumannarkoil. He dismissed rumors of internal discord within the party, highlighting transparent discussions with members like Aloor Shanavas. Thirumavalavan framed the 2026 election as a critical battle against the rise of right-wing forces in Tamil Nadu, emphasizing the importance of securing a decisive victory for the DMK-led alliance.
Reiterating his commitment to the alliance’s success, Thirumavalavan emphasized that his focus remains on strengthening the coalition and ensuring its return to power with a substantial majority. He underscored that his political journey has been defined by sacrifices and a dedication to collective interests above personal gains.
