Three candidates submitted a total of six nomination papers on Saturday for the upcoming by-election in Gujarat’s Umreth Assembly constituency. Among the candidates are Maulikkumar Shah from the Bharatiya Janata Dal, and Harshad Parmar and Vimalkumar Patel from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The electoral process is in full swing, with nominations being filed in accordance with the Election Commission’s schedule.
The by-election was triggered by the passing of BJP MLA Govind Parmar on March 6, resulting in the vacant seat. Polling is set for April 23, with electronic voting machines (EVMs) to be used at over 300 booths, and the counting of votes scheduled for May 4. BJP candidate Harshad Parmar, son of the late MLA and a current sarpanch, submitted his nomination papers earlier in the day, with the support of Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and other senior party members.
The Congress has nominated Bhrugurajsinh Chauhan as its candidate for the by-election, while the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is yet to announce its contender. The Election Commission guidelines require candidates to file an affidavit in Form-26 along with their nomination papers. The interest in the by-election is evident, with 42 nomination forms already collected by 17 potential candidates.
