The Trump administration defended its actions in Venezuela, stating that the arrest of Nicolás Maduro was a targeted law enforcement operation, not a declaration of war or military occupation. Secretary of State Marco Rubio emphasized on NBC’s Meet the Press that the United States is not at war with Venezuela but is focused on combating drug trafficking organizations. Rubio clarified that the operation, carried out under US legal authority, was not an invasion but a law enforcement initiative.

Rubio explained on ABC’s This Week that US forces were briefly present on the ground solely for the arrest before withdrawing. He highlighted that the mission was executed based on court warrants and sanctions enforcement, without requiring congressional combat authorization. The administration’s current strategy involves sustained pressure through sanctions and maritime enforcement, as mentioned by Rubio on CBS’s Face the Nation.

The focus has shifted towards enforcing an oil “quarantine” using court orders to seize sanctioned shipments, according to Rubio. He emphasized that the pressure would persist until beneficial changes aligning with US interests and aiding Venezuelans are observed. Rubio dismissed inquiries about US administration of Venezuela, stating that Washington is influencing outcomes through policy measures, particularly targeting drug trafficking and gang activities.

US Ambassador to the United Nations Mike Waltz supported the operation on Fox News’ Sunday Morning Futures, justifying it under international law as self-defense. Waltz stressed the importance of preventing Venezuela from becoming a hub for adversaries, citing alleged connections between Maduro and countries like China, Russia, Iran, and Hezbollah. Rubio reiterated that there are no US troops stationed in Venezuela and hinted at potential future actions while emphasizing a lack of current military presence.

Rubio, discussing elections and political transitions, urged patience, noting that such processes require time. The administration emphasized evaluating Venezuela’s actions rather than promises, maintaining pressure until US security concerns are addressed.
