The UAE has named a road in Abu Dhabi after Dr. George Matthew, an Indian-origin doctor, as part of the “Honoring UAE’s Visionaries: Commemorative Streets” project. George Matthew Street, near Sheikh Shakbooth Medical City in Al Mafraq, celebrates Dr. Matthew’s 57-year-long contribution to the UAE’s healthcare system.
Arriving in the UAE in 1967, Dr. Matthew planned to move to the US but stayed due to Al Ain’s beauty. He became Al Ain’s first government doctor and opened the first clinic under Sheikh Zayed’s blessing. Known affectionately as “Matyous,” he significantly contributed to modern medicine in the UAE.
Dr. Matthew held several key positions, becoming the Medical Director of the Al Ain Region in 1972 and a Health Authority Consultant in 2001. His roles were crucial in advancing healthcare services and modern medical practices. He also pursued specialized studies in tropical diseases and hospital management.
Dr. Matthew and his family were granted UAE citizenship ten years ago in recognition of his service. Originally from Kerala, India, he continues to work in the Private Health department. Naming a street after him is a testament to his lifelong dedication to improving healthcare in the UAE.
Dr. Matthew’s contributions include setting up the first clinic in Al Ain, shaping healthcare policies, training healthcare professionals, and introducing innovative practices. His legacy serves as a guiding light for future healthcare professionals in the UAE.
