The UN Security Council, under the presidency of Jamal Fares Alrowaiei from Bahrain, will focus on the West Asia conflict in April. Alrowaiei highlighted the council’s priorities, including peace and stability, security threats, inclusion, and multilateralism. The council’s agenda for the month will cover issues related to Iran, Palestine, Lebanon, and other regional concerns.
Security Council members expressed concern over the recent deaths of three Indonesian peacekeepers serving with UNIFIL in Lebanon. They reiterated their support for UNIFIL and urged all parties to ensure the safety of peacekeepers and uphold their freedom of movement. The Council called for a thorough investigation into the incidents and emphasized the importance of implementing relevant Security Council resolutions.
In addition to the tragic deaths, five peacekeepers were injured in recent hostilities along the Blue Line. The Security Council called for full compliance with resolution 1701 (2006) and reaffirmed its commitment to Lebanon’s sovereignty, independence, territorial integrity, and unity. The incidents underscore the ongoing challenges faced by peacekeepers in the region.
