Union Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita expressed optimism that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will secure the Nazira Assembly seat in the upcoming Assam Assembly elections. Margherita, while campaigning for BJP candidate Mayur Borgohain in Nazira, highlighted a shift in favor of the ruling party among voters. He emphasized the constituency’s desire for development and progress, indicating strong support for the BJP.
Nazira, historically a Congress stronghold, saw senior Congress leader Debabrata Saikia comfortably retaining the seat in the 2016 and 2021 Assembly elections. Saikia, a prominent figure in Assam politics and the current Leader of the Opposition in the state Assembly, has maintained the Congress’s relevance in Upper Assam despite the BJP’s increasing influence.
Despite Saikia’s political legacy and past electoral victories, the BJP anticipates a potential shift due to anti-incumbency sentiments and a compelling development agenda. This sets the stage for a competitive contest in the upcoming polls on April 9.
