The United States announced on Tuesday that it is escalating military strikes on Iran while simultaneously engaging in active negotiations. Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth revealed that talks with Iran are progressing positively under the operation named “Operation Epic Fury.” Hegseth emphasized the importance of negotiations but also mentioned the readiness to resort to military action if necessary.
US officials highlighted that the military campaign against Iran has reached a critical phase, with American firepower increasing while Iran’s capabilities are diminishing. General Dan Caine, the Joint Chiefs Chairman, stated that operations are being conducted across various domains to limit Iran’s ability to project power beyond its borders. The US forces have been targeting Iran’s missile systems, naval assets, and defense industrial base.
Recent assessments indicate that the US strikes are impacting Iranian forces on the ground, leading to desertions, key personnel shortages, and frustrations among senior leaders. Hegseth mentioned the destruction of key command bunkers, forcing Iranian leaders to operate under constrained conditions. The US also signaled its commitment to ensuring the Strait of Hormuz remains open, emphasizing the international significance of the waterway.
Despite the ongoing military actions, US officials refrained from disclosing specific objectives or timelines for the operation. Hegseth emphasized the importance of maintaining unpredictability in military strategies and did not rule out any options, including ground operations. President Donald Trump has reiterated the stance that Iran must abandon its nuclear ambitions, emphasizing that Iran cannot possess nuclear weapons.
