A ceasefire recently brokered between the United States and Iran is already showing signs of strain, according to Vice President J D Vance. Describing it as a “fragile truce,” Vance highlighted internal discord in Tehran as a looming threat to the agreement. The ceasefire, which came shortly after a US ultimatum to Iran, aimed at reopening crucial shipping lanes and ending disruptions to global commerce.

Vance emphasized the delicate nature of the truce, noting its nascent status of being only hours old. He pointed out that the agreement hinged on Iran’s commitment to allow passage through strategic waterways while the US and its allies suspended military actions. Despite achieving its military objectives before the ceasefire, Washington remains cautious due to internal divisions within Iran’s leadership.

While President Trump has directed diplomatic negotiations, Vance stressed the importance of managing the situation carefully to prevent the unraveling of the fragile truce. He highlighted the necessity for Iran to negotiate in good faith to reach a broader agreement, warning of the significant leverage retained by the US in case of failed talks. The ceasefire currently offers a narrow window for diplomacy following a period of escalating tensions, with the future course dependent on Iran’s negotiating stance.
