U.S. Temporarily Halts New Student Visa Interviews Amid Enhanced Social Media Screening

The U.S. State Department has temporarily paused the scheduling of new visa interviews for international students and exchange visitors applying for F, M, and J visas. This measure, effective from May 27, 2025, aims to facilitate the implementation of expanded social media screening protocols for international applicants. Applicants with existing appointments are not affected by this pause.

The enhanced screening will involve thorough reviews of applicants’ social media accounts. Applicants lacking a social media presence or restricting access to their online accounts may face visa denials, marking an unprecedented approach where even digital silence is viewed as potentially suspicious.

This policy shift has raised concerns among educational institutions and policymakers. Indian-American Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi criticized the move as a “strategic blunder,” highlighting its potential to deter international talent and negatively impact the U.S. economy.
