Prashant Kumar Singh, a Deputy Commissioner in the Uttar Pradesh GST Department in Ayodhya, has resigned from his position. He cited his decision as a show of support for Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath amidst the controversy involving Shankaracharya Swami Avimukteshwaranand Saraswati. The resignation follows allegations by Swami Avimukteshwaranand that his followers were obstructed from a holy dip at the Sangam Nose during Mauni Amavasya.
The administration, however, denied the allegations, explaining that the Swami was attempting to proceed on a chariot to the Sangam Nose, which was restricted due to safety concerns and overcrowding. Officials reported that supporters of Swami Avimukteshwaranand tried to breach barricades, leading to police intervention. The controversy expanded as doubts arose over the use of the ‘Shankaracharya’ title by Swami Avimukteshwaranand, a matter still pending before the Supreme Court.
Prashant Kumar Singh submitted his resignation directly to the Governor amidst the escalating situation. In his resignation letter, Singh expressed dismay over derogatory remarks allegedly made by Shankaracharya against Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. Singh emphasized his support for the government, Chief Minister, Prime Minister, and the nation’s Constitution, stating that he could not remain silent in the face of what he considered inappropriate comments.
