Vice-President C.P. Radhakrishnan praised the Women’s Self-Help Groups (SHGs) during an event at the International Trade & Fair Centre in Tripura on International Women’s Day. He highlighted the significant role of SHGs in grassroots development and women’s empowerment, emphasizing the shift towards women-led development under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership.
Radhakrishnan acknowledged the empowerment brought about by Self-Help Groups, enabling women to actively contribute to social and economic progress. He mentioned the ‘Lakhpati Didi’ initiative, revealing that over 10 crore women are part of SHGs nationwide, with more than two crore achieving ‘Lakhpati Didi’ status, denoting an annual household income exceeding Rs 1 lakh.
The Vice-President commended Tripura’s efforts in aiming to create 1.35 lakh ‘Lakhpati Didis’, showcasing the state’s commitment to women’s empowerment. He also highlighted initiatives like ‘Namo Drone Didi’ and the prioritization of women beneficiaries in key schemes, such as Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, Jal Jeevan Mission, and Ujjwala Yojana, which have significantly enhanced women’s lives.
Radhakrishnan expressed optimism about the future economic contributions of women, foreseeing the transformation of ‘Lakhpati Didis’ into ‘Crorepati Didis,’ further bolstering the nation’s economy. He visited SHG stalls at the International Trade & Fair Centre, learning about the diverse local products showcased by Self-Help Groups from different districts.
