Actor-turned-politician Vijay, also the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief, has intensified his election campaign in Puducherry. He emphasized that his party’s candidates are aligned “with the people, as one among them.” The 30-member Puducherry Assembly polls are set for April 9, with just four days left for campaigning.
Vijay recently addressed a public gathering at Thattanchavadi market area, attracting a significant number of supporters. He conducted a roadshow that reportedly exceeded the permitted time before heading to the campaign venue. This marks the first time his party is contesting in Puducherry, with candidate selection based on grassroots connections rather than political lineage.
In his rally speech, Vijay took aim at rival alliances, criticizing both the DMK-Congress and NR Congress-BJP partnerships. He highlighted the internal contradictions within the DMK-Congress front, labeling it as existing “only in name.” Vijay accused leaders in these alliances of betraying not just the people but also their own leadership, turning it into a subject of mockery.
Regarding the NR Congress-BJP alliance, Vijay characterized it as a “weak and opportunistic” coalition, alleging its exploitation of his party for political advantages. He questioned the Congress and BJP on their failure to grant statehood to Puducherry despite holding power at the Union level at different times. Promising to strive for statehood if elected, Vijay outlined plans for immediate local body elections, filling government vacancies, and offering Rs 25 lakh insurance coverage for every family.
Vijay framed the election as a choice between “deceptive alliances” and “people-oriented governance,” urging voters to reject the major fronts and give his party a chance. He stressed the need for good governance in Puducherry and pledged to stand by the people if elected.
