Violence marred the 13th parliamentary election in Bangladesh as clashes and attacks unfolded on Thursday. Nasiruddin Patwari, a candidate for the 11-party alliance and leader of the National Citizens Party (NCP), was reportedly assaulted while visiting a polling booth in Dhaka-8 constituency. Patwari accused supporters of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) candidate Mirza Abbas of orchestrating the attack.
Bangladesh’s leading Bengali daily, Jugantor, reported that the incident occurred as Patwari was addressing reporters at the center around noon on Election Day. He was rescued by law enforcement after the confrontation. Patwari later took to social media, alleging that the violence was instigated by “Mirza Abbas’s terrorist forces” and BNP members.
The violence on Election Day was widespread, with clashes reported at various polling stations across the country. Tragically, a political leader, Mohibuzzaman Kochi, lost his life at the Alia Madrasa polling station in Khulna district. The deteriorating law and order situation in Bangladesh was evident as tensions escalated between supporters of the BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami.
In a separate incident, a cocktail bomb attack at a polling station in Gopalganj Sadar Upazila left three individuals injured. The Reshma International School polling station in Gopalganj district was the site of the attack. The ongoing parliamentary elections in Bangladesh are unfolding amidst heightened political conflict and concerns over the fairness of the polls.
