Garhwa town in Jharkhand witnessed violent clashes between police and locals following the death of a youth in a road accident. The incident occurred when Pankaj Kumar, 20, was hit by a vehicle while riding his two-wheeler, leading to his immediate death. The enraged villagers demanded the driver’s arrest and accused the road construction company of negligence.
The protest escalated as villagers blocked key roads, including Shaheed Bhagat Singh Chowk, disrupting traffic flow. Despite police attempts to calm the situation, tensions rose, resulting in stone-pelting and damage to a police vehicle. Subsequently, heavy police presence was deployed to restore order in the area.
District Council Chairperson Shanti Devi, along with JMM leaders Tahir Ansari and Deepak Pratap Dev, visited the site to offer condolences to the bereaved family and support the villagers’ demands. They called for dialogue between the district administration and villagers to address the situation. Police are actively working to identify the vehicle involved and apprehend the driver, with a thorough investigation underway.
