Senior BJP leader Yumnam Khemchand Singh is expected to be sworn in as the new Chief Minister of Manipur at the Lok Bhavan on Wednesday evening. A senior Manipur government official mentioned that a few ministers, possibly including one or two Deputy Chief Ministers, are also likely to take oath alongside the new Chief Minister. The exact timing of the ceremony and the names of the ministers are yet to be finalized.
Yumnam Khemchand Singh, accompanied by Central Observer Tarun Chugh, BJP’s Northeast coordinator Sambit Patra, and several MLAs, met with the Governor at the Lok Bhavan to stake a claim to form the BJP-led government. Following this, the Governor extended an invitation to Singh to establish the government. Reports suggest that the new BJP administration in Manipur may feature one or two Deputy Chief Ministers, with two MLAs from the Kuki-Zo community potentially being included in Singh’s ministry.
After a period of uncertainty and negotiations over government formation in Manipur, the BJP announced that former Assembly Speaker and cabinet minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh will assume the role of the state’s Chief Minister. Singh was elected as the Legislature Party Leader during a meeting in the national capital attended by BJP MLAs from Manipur, along with senior party leaders. The imposition of President’s Rule in Manipur since February 13 last year, following the resignation of then Chief Minister N. Biren Singh amid ethnic tensions, is expected to be lifted with the Ministry of Home Affairs likely to issue a notification on Wednesday.
