Known for his involvement in sports and politics, Singh previously served as the Speaker of the Manipur Legislative Assembly and held various ministerial positions.
Yumnam Khemchand Singh, a prominent figure in the Meitei community, served as the Speaker of the Manipur Assembly from 2017 to 2022 and secured victories in the 2017 and 2022 Assembly elections. He was part of the N. Biren Singh-led ministry until President’s Rule was imposed in Manipur. Singh’s background includes grassroots organizing within the BJP and a strong presence in Taekwondo circles.
Singh, recognized for his efforts towards ethnic harmony, recently visited tribal-majority districts in Manipur, aiming to bridge gaps between different communities. His visit to areas affected by ethnic conflict was seen as a significant step towards reconciliation. Singh’s outreach to tribal villages and relief camps highlighted his commitment to fostering unity and addressing the aftermath of violence in the region.
