Pitru Paksha is a sacred 16-day period in Hinduism dedicated to remembering and honoring ancestors through rituals such as Shraddha, Pind Daan, and Tarpan. It is believed that during these days, the souls of ancestors descend to the earthly realm to bless their descendants and free them from life’s difficulties.

In 2025, Pitru Paksha carries special spiritual significance as families across India prepare to perform rituals that express gratitude, devotion, and remembrance.

Pitru Paksha 2025 Dates

  • Start Date: Sunday, 7th September 2025 (Bhadrapada Purnima at 1:41 AM)
  • End Date: Sunday, 21st September 2025 (Sarvapitri Amavasya at 11:38 PM)

👉 Sarvapitri Amavasya is the final day when Shraddha can be performed for all ancestors, especially if one does not remember the exact tithi (death anniversary) of their forefathers.

Key Rituals of Pitru Paksha 2025

1. Shraddha

  • A comprehensive ritual that includes invocation, prayers, feeding Brahmins, and making offerings.
  • Believed to bring peace and salvation to ancestors.
  • Essential part: Pind Daan, the offering of rice balls (pinds), considered nourishment for the subtle body of the departed soul.

2. Tarpan

  • Performed daily during Pitru Paksha using water, sesame seeds (til), and kusha grass.
  • Helps purify karmic bonds and strengthens the spiritual connection with ancestors.

3. Brahmin Bhoj & Dakshina

  • Feeding Brahmins with Sattvik (pure vegetarian) food and offering Dakshina is considered highly meritorious.
  • As per scriptures, Lord Vishnu blesses the family when food is offered in the name of ancestors.

4. Charity (Daan)

  • Donating food grains, clothes, and essentials to the needy ensures peace for ancestors and blessings for the family.
  • Acts of kindness during Pitru Paksha multiply spiritual benefits.

Spiritual Significance of Pitru Paksha 2025

  • Believed to liberate ancestors from worldly desires, granting them peace.
  • Removes Pitru Dosha (ancestral karmic imbalance), often associated with obstacles in health, finance, or relationships.
  • Blessings received during this period are thought to bring prosperity, harmony, and spiritual upliftment.

Rules & Observances to Follow

  • Perform rituals at the correct tithi or on Sarvapitri Amavasya if unsure.
  • Maintain purity – avoid tamasic (non-vegetarian, onion, garlic) food.
  • Daily prayers and offering water to ancestors are recommended.
  • Show humility and devotion while performing rituals.

Pitru Paksha 2025 is more than just a religious observance—it is a sacred opportunity to express love, gratitude, and respect towards our ancestors. Whether performed at home, in pilgrimage sites like Gaya, Prayagraj, or Haridwar, or with the help of priests, these rituals strengthen the bond between the past, present, and future generations.

By performing Shraddha, Tarpan, and Daan with faith, families invite peace into their lineage and blessings into their lives.
