Language: Bengali
Genre: Adventure, Fantasy, Sci-Fi
Age Rating: U/A

Blending imagination, culture, and cinematic charm, Pokkhirajer Dim offers a refreshing turn in Bengali cinema. Directed by Soukarya Ghosal—known for his unique visual style in Rainbow Jelly—this 2025 fantasy film is rooted in rural Bengal and driven by childhood wonder. Combining adventure, sci-fi, and folklore, it weaves a tale perfect for audiences of all ages.

The Story: A Glowing Stone with Ancient Secrets

The film revolves around Ghoton, a child with dyslexia and an indomitable spirit, who relocates to the mystical village of Akashgunj. When he stumbles upon an ancient alien relic known as the “Pokkhirajer Dim” (the Egg of the Winged Horse), Ghoton, along with his fiery friend Poppins and eccentric teacher Batabyal Sir, is thrust into a wild adventure involving UFOs, greedy village leaders, and a relic-hunting foreigner.

As the legend of the sky temple unravels, Ghoton’s bond with Shaap Babaji (the keeper of the UFO) deepens, setting the stage for a touching tale of courage, love, and discovery.

A Unique Mix of Folklore and Sci-Fi

Director Soukarya Ghosal continues his signature storytelling that combines heart, color, and imagination. He beautifully balances the mysticism of Bengali folklore with themes of science, cosmic wonder, and coming-of-age lessons. The result is a visual fantasy steeped in cultural roots yet accessible to global audiences.

Alexx O’Nell’s Quirky Role Adds Global Appeal

One of the film’s standout elements is Alexx O’Nell, who plays a quirky British archaeologist journeying to a quaint Indian village in search of an ancient temple and its mysterious “living stone.” This character adds both humor and intrigue to the unfolding mystery.

Following his recent serious roles in Lucifer 2: Empuraan, Kesari: Chapter 2, and Phule, Pokkhirajer Dim gives O’Nell a delightful chance to showcase his lighter side. This children’s fantasy-adventure film is his warm-hearted detour before the darker narratives of Raghu Dakat and Devi Chowdhurani release later this year.

The Cast: Anchored by Talents

Anirban Bhattacharya is in fine form as the eccentric Batabyal Sir. His timing and character design bring gravitas and laughter in equal measure. Supporting performances from Mahabrata Basu, Anumegha Banerjee, Shyamal Chakraborty, and Nidhi Basu help enrich the small-town world the story inhabits. Their combined efforts help make Pokkhirajer Dim both grounded and fantastical.

Technical Craft and Music

The film’s cinematography captures the rural landscape and mystical settings with elegance, while the background score accentuates the film’s blend of wonder and suspense. The production design is modest yet inventive, allowing the narrative to take center stage while enriching it visually.

What Works

1. Inventive Storytelling with Cultural Depth

Soukarya Ghosal pays homage to literary legends like Satyajit Ray and Leela Majumdar while carving his own path. The story is rich in Bengali folklore, blending fantasy and science fiction with emotional grounding.

2. Anirban Bhattacharya’s Eccentric Brilliance

As Batabyal Sir, Anirban Bhattacharya is a scene-stealer. His mad scientist look, comedic timing, and emotional depth make him the heart of the film.

3. Strong Child Performances

Mahabrata Basu and Anumegha Banerjee breathe life into Ghoton and Poppins with effortless charm. Their chemistry is genuine and adds emotional weight to the adventure.

4. Cinematography and Music

Shimultala’s scenic beauty is beautifully captured, and Nabarun Bose’s music—especially the hauntingly beautiful “Ki Hobe Tar”—elevates the film’s emotional and fantastical elements.

5. Global Appeal

Alexx O’Nell as the foreign villain adds a quirky and intriguing layer to the story, giving it cross-cultural resonance.

What Doesn’t Work

1. Pacing Issues in the Middle Act

Some segments feel slightly stretched, especially the subplot around the village politics. Trimming could’ve kept the momentum tighter.

2. Slight Overindulgence in Tropes

While the film celebrates literary and fantastical references, at times it leans a bit too heavily

Why Pokkhirajer Dim Deserves Your Attention

  • Genre-Bending Appeal: Successfully marries fantasy, science fiction, and cultural folklore
  • Family Entertainment: Engaging for kids and nostalgic for adults
  • Star Power with Substance: Alexx O’Nell’s role introduces global excitement to a homegrown story
  • Fresh Perspective: Directed by a filmmaker known for pushing creative boundaries in Bengali cinema

Final Verdict: ⭐⭐⭐⭐✮ (4.5/5 Stars)

Pokkhirajer Dim is a rare gem in Indian cinema—an intelligent, visually rich, and emotionally resonant tale that blends the magic of childhood with the mystery of the cosmos. With its heart in the right place and eyes set on the stars, this is a film that deserves to be watched, celebrated, and remembered.
