RRR Gets Special Mention as Oscars Introduce Stunt Design Category for 100th Academy Awards

The Academy Awards are embracing evolution once again, and this time, it’s a long-awaited nod to a pivotal part of cinema – stunt design. In a groundbreaking move, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced the addition of a brand-new competitive category: Achievement in Stunt Design, set to debut at the 100th Oscars in 2028, honouring films released in 2027. And as a proud moment for Indian cinema, SS Rajamouli’s global blockbuster RRR has received an honorary mention in the Academy’s announcement — a testament to its exceptional action choreography and global impact.

    Celebrating the Art of Action

For decades, stunt performers and coordinators have been the unsung heroes of cinema, risking life and limb to bring adrenaline-pumping action sequences to life. From daring car chases to intricate fight choreography, these artists play a vital role in elevating storytelling. Recognizing this, The Academy shared a message that resonated deeply with film lovers:

“Stunts have always been part of the magic of movies. Now, they’re part of the Oscars.”

This new category will ensure that the effort, creativity, and innovation behind action sequences are finally celebrated on the world’s biggest cinematic stage.

    RRR: A Deserving Spotlight

Among the films featured in the Academy’s promotional poster for the new category were Everything Everywhere All at Once, Mission: Impossible, and India’s pride — RRR. While not a direct nominee (since the category is yet to be introduced), RRR’s mention highlights how deeply its impact has been felt by global audiences and critics alike.

Directed by SS Rajamouli, and starring Jr NTR and Ram Charan, RRR redefined what action in Indian cinema could look like. With high-octane sequences, inventive fight choreography, and sweeping emotional arcs, the film captivated audiences across continents. Whether it was the forest rescue scene, the bridge explosion, or the unforgettable sequence with animals storming a colonial palace, RRR delivered action with both intensity and artistry.

Stunts have always been part of the magic of movies. Now, they’re part of the Oscars.

    A Legacy Cemented

This honorary mention comes two years after RRR made history at the 95th Academy Awards by clinching the Oscar for Best Original Song for the electrifying Naatu Naatu. The film’s cultural footprint continues to expand — it’s still running successfully in Japan and has earned admiration from cinematic legends like James Cameron and Steven Spielberg. In yet another sign of its global appeal, Rajamouli, along with Jr NTR and Ram Charan, is set to participate in a special Q&A session at London’s Royal Albert Hall on May 11.

With over ₹1,200 crore grossed worldwide, RRR not only delivered blockbuster entertainment but also opened new doors for Indian films in the international market. Its recognition in the Academy’s announcement reaffirms its place in the global cinematic conversation.

Looking Ahead to the 100th Oscars

While the announcement has been largely celebrated, it also sparked discussions online. Fans praised the move to include stunt design, though some questioned why it took so long. There were also calls for Tom Cruise and Jackie Chan to be recognized for their lifetime contributions to action cinema — with many hoping they’ll be among the first recipients.

Regardless, the introduction of the Stunt Design category is a milestone. It acknowledges that behind every jaw-dropping moment on screen is a team of artists who make the impossible look effortless.

As we look toward the 100th Oscars, RRR’s mention in this historic announcement isn’t just a nod to its stunt work — it’s a tribute to the rising power and influence of Indian cinema on the global stage. Rajamouli’s vision and the film’s groundbreaking action sequences have carved a space for Indian storytellers in Hollywood’s highest echelons.

With this new category, future films — from India and beyond — will now have the opportunity to shine where it matters most: at the heart of cinematic excellence.
