Language: Punjabi
Age Rating: U/A
Genre: Comedy, Family Drama, Romance

When Saunkan Saunkne hit theatres in 2022, it turned into a cultural comedy phenomenon across Punjab and among the global Indian diaspora. Today, the madness returns with Saunkan Saunkanay 2, and this time, it’s double the Sargun Mehta. With Ammy Virk once again caught between spirited wives and soaring confusion, this sequel jumps straight into loud laughter and larger-than-life situations.

Here’s our early take on the film that’s lighting up cinema halls from Ludhiana to London.

Plot Preview: What Happens When Nirman Marries… Again?

The film picks up with Nirmal Singh (played by a brilliant Ammy Virk) already overwhelmed with two wives—Naseeb Kaur (Sargun Mehta) and Kiranjit Kaur (Nimrat Khaira)—who are sisters and constantly at odds. The film wastes no time diving into the domestic battlefield, fueled further by Nirmal’s mother (played by the iconic Nirmal Rishi) who decides her son’s solution lies in… a third wife.

Enter Monica Bellucci, an Italian woman (also played by Sargun Mehta in a hilarious double role). Her arrival turns the household upside down as the first two wives team up to protect their turf, leading to chaotic and laugh-out-loud sequences involving the entire village.

Performances: Sargun Mehta Steals the Spotlight

Sargun Mehta’s dual act is undoubtedly the highlight of Saunkan Saunkanay 2. Playing two contrasting characters—one rooted in Punjabi traditions and the other a modern, westernized Christian bride—she delivers both with precision. Her range, from comic timing to emotional depth, shines throughout.

Ammy Virk brings his signature blend of confusion and charm. As a man torn between expectations and reality, he plays the role with his usual likable screen presence. His chemistry with Sargun and Nimrat remains the film’s emotional core.

Nimrat Khaira brings quiet strength and sharp comic timing to balance out the more dramatic moments. Her presence ensures that the film never strays too far into caricature.

Direction and Tone: Loud, Colorful, and Consistently Funny

Director Amarjit Singh Saron retains the core formula of the first film while expanding the scale. The sequel leans into its absurd premise and uses it to fuel situational comedy. With clever editing and energetic pacing, the film never lingers too long and keeps the audience entertained.

Despite the exaggerated situations, the emotional beats land well, especially in scenes that explore the tension and affection between the three wives and one husband.

Music and Visuals: A Grand Punjabi Wedding Vibe

The music is festive and perfectly suited for a film of this tone. From upbeat wedding numbers to emotional background scores, the soundtrack supports the storytelling effectively.

Visually, the film balances rural Punjabi aesthetics with global settings. The contrast between traditional and western cultures is portrayed through vibrant costume design, set pieces, and song sequences.

What Works

  • Hilarious Situations: From henfights to village gossip, the comedy remains high-energy and punchy.
  • Star Power: The chemistry between the lead trio is electric, and their timing fuels the entertainment.
  • Music: Tracks like “Dieting”, “Mia Bella”, and “Main Nachdi” are catchy and elevate the film’s festive tone.
  • Dialogue Writing: Crackling lines and witty exchanges keep the laughter going, especially in the first half.
  • Nostalgia & Cameos: The inclusion of Punjabi cinema’s beloved veteran actresses in “Gore Gore Mem” is a treat.

What Doesn’t Work

  • Overused Stereotypes: Some jokes rely heavily on tired clichés around women, weight, and marriage.
  • Second-Half Slump: The film loses a bit of steam post-interval with predictability creeping in.

Final Verdict: ⭐⭐⭐⭐½ (4.5/5 Stars)

Saunkan Saunkanay 2 delivers double the madness and triple the entertainment. While not without its flaws, it knows its audience well and serves up a riotous mix of Punjabi humor, dramatic flair, and memorable performances. Fans of the original and lovers of desi family chaos will walk out of theaters with smiles—and sore cheeks from laughing.

Relatable Yet Outrageous: A True Family Entertainer

While the plot defies logic in several places, that’s part of its charm. Saunkan Saunkanay 2 is designed to be a crowd-pleasing, over-the-top comedy with emotional undercurrents. It doesn’t aim for realism, but instead offers a joyous, exaggerated look at family dynamics and marital chaos.

Audiences looking for clean family fun with dollops of humor, music, and drama will likely find this film engaging.

Should You Watch It?

If you’re in the mood for a lighthearted, laughter-packed Punjabi entertainer, Saunkan Saunkanay 2 hits the mark. It delivers on its promise of confusion, comedy, and culture clashes, with Sargun Mehta’s performance standing tall as a clear highlight.

The film also solidifies Ammy Virk’s stature as a dependable lead in family comedies and reaffirms Nimrat Khaira’s range as a performer.
