“Songs of Paradise,” premiering on Prime Video on August 29, 2025, is more than just a film—it is a heartfelt tribute to the legendary Kashmiri playback singer, Raj Begum, who is often referred to as the Nightingale of Kashmir. Directed and written by Danish Renzu, the film captures not only the music and legacy of Raj Begum but also her courage in defying societal norms during an era when women’s voices were often silenced.

The film stars Saba Azad and Soni Razdan, who together portray Noor Begum, a character inspired by Raj Begum, across two different timelines. This creative dual-casting symbolizes the continuity of her voice through time—one young and ambitious, the other wise and reflective. The amalgamation of their portrayals brings to life the emotional journey of a woman who dared to dream in a conservative cultural setting.

Cast and Performances

  • Saba Azad shines as the young Noor Begum, capturing the passion, fire, and struggles of a dreamer in Kashmir.
  • Soni Razdan brings depth, dignity, and grace as the older Noor, embodying the resilience and legacy of a cultural icon.
  • The film also features a stellar ensemble cast including Zain Khan Durrani, Sheeba Chaddha, Taaruk Raina, and Lillete Dubey, each adding richness to the narrative.

Director Danish Renzu praised Azad and Razdan for their layered performances, calling them the “soul of the film.”

Storyline & Themes

At its core, Songs of Paradise is about resilience, identity, and the transformative power of music. Raj Begum, the first female voice on Radio Kashmir and a recipient of the Padma Shri, became a beacon of hope for Kashmiri women. The film reflects how her songs weren’t merely melodies but bold statements of freedom, heritage, and dignity.

Key themes explored:

  • Music as resistance – How art can thrive even under cultural and political restrictions.
  • Women empowerment – A journey of breaking stereotypes in a male-dominated industry.
  • Heritage and legacy – Celebrating Kashmiri cultural roots through music.

Visuals and Music

The film beautifully intertwines Kashmiri landscapes with Raj Begum’s soulful songs, creating a nostalgic yet empowering atmosphere. The first motion poster, blending Azad and Razdan into one frame, already suggests how the film treats Noor Begum as both timeless and universal.

The soundtrack (yet to be fully revealed) is expected to blend traditional Kashmiri folk with modern orchestration, carrying forward Begum’s legacy for younger audiences.
