Genre: Thriller, Drama
Director: Tharun Moorthy
Cast: Mohanlal, Shobana, Binu Pappu, Prakash Varma
Duration: 2h 10min
Rating: ★★★★☆ (4/5)
Age Rating: U/A (Suitable for 12+)

Story Overview

Thudarum tells the story of Shanmugham, a humble taxi driver from Ranni, whose life centers around his prized Ambassador car. When his vehicle is wrongly seized in connection with a drug smuggling case, Shanmugham is forced into an unexpected battle. As he seeks to reclaim what’s his, he unravels layers of corruption and betrayal, setting the stage for an emotionally charged tale of justice and resilience.

Direction & Screenplay

Director Tharun Moorthy delivers a mature, slow-burn thriller with a grounded, realistic approach. The screenplay strikes a delicate balance between emotional storytelling and suspenseful progression. With nuanced writing and carefully built tension, the narrative hooks the audience without relying on loud action or melodrama.

Performances

Mohanlal is in fine form, effortlessly carrying the weight of a role that demands both emotional vulnerability and moral grit. Shobana brings a quiet strength and poise to her role as Lalitha, marking a graceful return to the screen alongside her longtime co-star. Their chemistry is as compelling as ever. Supporting performances by Binu Pappu and Prakash Varma add authenticity and texture to the story.

Cinematography & Music

The film’s visuals paint a vivid picture of Kerala’s rural and semi-urban landscapes, with cinematography that enhances the tone of the narrative. The muted color palette and natural lighting reinforce the film’s grounded approach. Jakes Bejoy’s music and background score are tastefully understated, heightening emotion and tension without overpowering the scenes.

Strengths and Shortcomings

What Works:

  • Mohanlal’s powerful, restrained performance
  • Realistic and emotionally resonant direction
  • Shobana’s graceful screen presence
  • Beautiful cinematography and atmospheric score

What Could Be Better:

  • Some supporting roles could use more depth
  • Slower pace in parts may test patience
  • Predictable story beats for seasoned thriller fans

Should You Watch It?

Definitely. Thudarum is a heartfelt, thought-provoking film that combines emotional storytelling with slow-burning suspense. With powerhouse performances and grounded direction, it’s a fine example of mature Malayalam cinema that respects both its audience and its characters.
