Age Rating: UA
Genre: Thriller, Drama
In Trending, debut director Naveen Unni crafts a psychological thriller that’s disturbingly close to today’s digital reality. The story revolves around Arjun (Kalaiyarasan) and Meera (Priyalaya), a successful influencer couple who seem to have it all—millions of YouTube subscribers, a dream home in ECR, and a perfect life… until their channel is mysteriously taken down.
Their once-fabulous life crumbles as debts loom and doubts begin to surface. Just when things hit rock bottom, a mysterious figure called “Mask” invites them to join a secretive reality show where couples can win back their fortune. The only catch? Every game is built around deception, secrecy, and betrayal. What follows is a slow descent into distrust, manipulation, and emotional chaos—all in the name of entertainment and survival.
Performance Analysis: Kalaiyarasan & Priyalaya Shine
Kalaiyarasan delivers a layered performance as Arjun, shifting smoothly between vulnerability, ego, and moral ambiguity. His portrayal adds much-needed depth to a character whose decisions become more twisted as the story unfolds. Priyalaya, as Meera, brings a balance of emotional strength and confusion, holding her own even when the narrative throws her into ethically grey areas.
Their chemistry is believable, which makes the emotional fallout of their decisions hit even harder. Both actors elevate the film with subtle expressions and controlled reactions, especially during the game’s more manipulative challenges.
Supporting characters, though limited in screen time, help build the eerie atmosphere of the show-within-the-film. Even the mysterious “Mask” character, despite being deliberately over-the-top, adds tension and unpredictability.
Technical Highlights: Music, Editing & Visuals
Sam CS’s background score does a lot of heavy lifting, often single-handedly building suspense in scenes that would otherwise feel flat. The music is intense, cinematic, and contributes significantly to the film’s tone.
However, at 2 hours and 27 minutes, Trending does overstay its welcome. Several scenes—particularly the dramatic arguments and game explanations—could have been tightened for better pacing. A crisper second half might have amplified the impact.
The cinematography and production design maintain a slick, high-contrast visual style that fits the YouTube and influencer aesthetic. The game’s location is effectively creepy, combining digital minimalism with voyeuristic setups.
Strengths & Shortcomings
Strengths:
- Unique premise blending social media culture with psychological thriller tropes
- Strong lead performances from Kalaiyarasan and Priyalaya
- Effective background score and visual tonality
- Social commentary on influencer burnout and digital deceit
Shortcomings:
- Slightly overstretched runtime
- Missed opportunity to push the boundaries of the “game” concept further
- Some dialogues about virality and follower count feel preachy and break immersion
Direction & Screenplay
Director Naveen Unni shows promise with his bold vision and clear message: the digital world may give you fame, but it comes at a price—sometimes your peace, and sometimes your partner. While the screenplay touches on multiple themes—greed, love, deceit—it occasionally loses focus trying to juggle all three. Still, the core tension between Arjun and Meera remains captivating enough to hold viewers’ attention.
Final Verdict: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ (4/5 Stars)
Trending is an intense and thought-provoking thriller that takes a sharp jab at influencer culture while telling a deeply personal story of trust and betrayal. Despite its minor flaws, the film delivers gripping performances, unsettling games, and a twisted moral dilemma at its core.
If you’re looking for a thriller that mirrors the psychological strain of today’s digital relationships, Trending is worth the watch—and might just make you rethink your next viral post.
