Age Rating: U/A
Genre: Action, Thriller

In this War 2 movie review, we dive into Ayan Mukerji’s ambitious sequel to the 2019 blockbuster. Backed by Yash Raj Films, the spy universe expands into a grand international spectacle, pairing Bollywood’s Hrithik Roshan with Tollywood’s Jr NTR in a high-stakes tale of betrayal, friendship, and relentless action. With stunning visuals, daring stunts, and heartfelt performances, War 2 proves to be a cinematic extravaganza worth experiencing on the big screen.

Plot: A Nation at Stake, A Friendship on Trial

The story picks up with Kabir Dhaliwal (Hrithik Roshan), once R&AW’s perfect agent, now working with a global criminal syndicate named Kali. His assignment—eliminate India’s Prime Minister and bring the nation to its knees.

Enter Vikram Chelapathy (Jr NTR), R&AW’s most skilled Special Units Officer, tasked with stopping Kabir. Their battle spans continents—from ice caves in Switzerland to bullet trains in Japan, European alleys, pirate-infested waters, and even the skies.

But beneath the gunfire and explosions lies an emotional undercurrent: Kabir and Vikram share a complicated past as childhood friends, torn apart by choices and destiny. Their clash is as much personal as it is political.

Supporting them are Wing Commander Kavya Luthra (Kiara Advani), a fearless Sky Force pilot, and Chief Vikrant Kaul (Anil Kapoor), R&AW’s sharp leader. Together, they must uncover the truth about Kali while grappling with Kabir’s moral ambiguity.

Performances: A Star-Studded Showcase

Hrithik Roshan as Kabir Dhaliwal

Hrithik commands the screen with charisma, physical prowess, and emotional depth. Whether he’s taming a wolf, battling in snowy mountains, or showing moments of vulnerability, Hrithik delivers a layered performance that goes beyond just action.

Jr NTR as Vikram Chelapathy

Jr NTR makes a thunderous Bollywood debut. His intensity and raw energy perfectly complement Hrithik’s controlled gravitas. From jaw-dropping stunts to heartfelt dialogues, Jr NTR proves he can hold his own in a mega-franchise. Their chemistry forms the film’s emotional and dramatic backbone.

Kiara Advani as Wing Commander Kavya

Kiara shines in her limited yet impactful role. She brings strength, poise, and compassion, adding depth to the action-heavy narrative. Her aerial combat sequences and emotional moments leave a mark.

Anil Kapoor as Chief Vikrant Kaul

Anil Kapoor once again showcases why he’s a timeless performer. As the R&AW chief, he brings both authority and emotional weight, grounding the film’s spy elements.

Ashutosh Rana as Colonel Luthra

Though brief, his role is pivotal in shaping Kabir’s choices. Rana’s performance adds emotional heft and makes the conflict more poignant.

Direction and Tone: Ayan Mukerji’s Spy Universe Vision

Ayan Mukerji takes the War franchise global, blending Hollywood-style spectacle with Indian emotional storytelling. His direction ensures that despite the grand scale, the personal bonds—friendship, loyalty, betrayal—remain at the center. While some narrative choices feel stretched, his ability to orchestrate massive action set pieces is commendable.

Cinematography, Action & Music

  • Cinematography: Benjamin Jasper captures exotic global landscapes with finesse. Each location—from snowy Alps to neon-lit cities—feels alive and cinematic.
  • Action: Choreographed by Spiro Razatos, Se-yeong Oh, and Sunil Rodrigues, the stunts are breathtaking. Plane-hanging sequences, sword fights, and submarine ambushes redefine Indian action cinema.
  • Music & Soundtrack: The background score pumps adrenaline into the film, while the Hrithik–Jr NTR dance face-off track “Janaabe Ali” adds glamour, even if it doesn’t surpass their iconic earlier performances.
  • VFX: Though uneven in parts, the ambition is commendable, giving the film a larger-than-life scale.

Strengths and Shortcomings

What Works

  • Explosive chemistry between Hrithik Roshan and Jr NTR
  • World-class action choreography
  • Emotional depth rooted in friendship and betrayal
  • Strong supporting cast performances
  • Stunning cinematography across multiple countries

Where It Stumbles

  • Close to 3-hour runtime stretches the narrative
  • Some twists feel predictable and cliched
  • VFX lacks polish in a few sequences

Cultural Relevance and Impact

Unlike its predecessor, War 2 weaves in a subtle layer of commentary on power, loyalty, and national identity. The pairing of Hrithik and Jr NTR itself is a celebration of Indian cinema’s north-south unity, making the film more than just an action thriller—it’s a cultural crossover event.

Final Verdict: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️½ (4.5/5 Stars)

War 2 is a thrilling spectacle of action and emotion, carried by stellar performances and breathtaking set pieces. While the narrative has its bumps, the sheer star power of Hrithik Roshan and Jr NTR, combined with Ayan Mukerji’s global vision, makes it one of the most entertaining big-screen experiences of 2025.

Should You Watch It?
Absolutely. If you love adrenaline-fueled blockbusters with heart, War 2 delivers in style.
