Not every impactful story fits into a traditional mold.

Some heroes break through conventions, others bridge borders, and a few carry with them the unmistakable “misfit” spirit.

These are the innovators, the dreamers, and the ones who see challenges as opportunities.

Today, I’m celebrating six inspiring misfits who, through their unique journeys, are making a difference around the world.

So, let me get started with the first Misfit

Rachna Gupta: Rediscovering Her Career with Purpose

Rachna Gupta is a powerhouse in digital strategy, with over 18 years of experience and the honor of being a three-time Sitecore MVP for Digital Strategy (2022-2024). Rachna’s story is unique because she took a career break to focus on raising her children and later returned to the field with renewed vigor, excelling across platforms, winning awards and uplifting countless digital projects. Her journey is also personal for me—she’s my better half, and watching her balance motherhood with a thriving career has been nothing short of inspiring. Rachna’s comeback reflects the resilience of misfits who redefine success on their own terms.

Atal Agarwal: From Adversity to Advocacy

Atal Agarwal embodies resilience. His journey from surviving a kayaking accident in Lake Tahoe to swimming from Alcatraz to San Francisco isn’t just a story of physical endurance—it’s a testament to his warrior mindset. Laid off in 2022 with just 60 days to find a new job, Atal turned his setback into a springboard, publishing his layoff story, completing an Ironman race, and landing his dream role. But Atal doesn’t stop there. His mission now? To help others realize their potential, mentor entrepreneurs, and support AI-powered healthcare ventures. Atal organizes meetups and communities, creating support systems for resilient dreamers across the U.S., turning personal challenges into a path forward for many.

Deedy Das: Engineering Change, Inspiring Innovation

Deedy Das has worn many hats: engineer at Google and Facebook, founding team member at Glean, and now a venture investor at Menlo Ventures. His career reflects a drive to build and invest in innovative ideas that have real-world impact. Through his work, Deedy focuses on supporting AI, SaaS, and infrastructure startups, channeling his expertise into ventures that push boundaries. But Deedy’s influence extends beyond his professional life; his public writing reaches millions, sharing insights and experiences that resonate with a global audience. Deedy’s journey from engineering to investment underscores the powerful role of Indian misfits in shaping technology and opening doors for the next wave of entrepreneurs.

Rahul Mehra: Building Community and Bridging Divides

Rahul Mehra’s mission is as ambitious as it is needed: creating unity among Indians worldwide through his platform, Indian.Community. In a world where geographical, cultural, and caste-based divides persist, Rahul’s vision is to bridge these gaps by offering a place for NRIs and Indians to connect, collaborate, and share knowledge. As a brand strategist and storyteller, Rahul leverages his skills to make Indian.Community a hub that fosters inclusivity, belonging, and empowerment for Indians everywhere. For Rahul, being a misfit isn’t about going against the grain; it’s about uniting people and celebrating the diversity that makes India—and Indians—strong.

Soundarya Balasubramani: Empowering Indians, One Visa at a Time

Soundarya’s journey to independence is as inspiring as it is challenging. After moving to the U.S. for her master’s at Columbia and working at Salesforce, she realized corporate life wasn’t for her. But as an immigrant, quitting her job wasn’t simple. Soundarya researched and navigated the complex process of securing an O-1 visa, which was denied initially but eventually approved. Along the way, she authored Unshackled and built a community around it, guiding others toward talent visas and empowering them with resources. Her Unshackled Club has grown to hundreds of members, and Soundarya continues to inspire as she builds new avenues for Indians, bringing hope and clarity to those facing similar challenges.

Brendan Rogers: I call him India’s Greatest Cheerleader

Brendan Rogers may not have been born in India, but his support for Indian startups is nothing short of extraordinary. As co-founder of 2am VC, an early-stage India-focused fund, Brendan has become one of the strongest advocates for the Indian startup ecosystem. His journey from co-founding Wag! in the U.S. to mentoring and advising startups around the world reflects his commitment to empowering young entrepreneurs. With a deep understanding of global markets, Brendan provides Indian founders with the guidance and encouragement they need to thrive on an international stage. I often referred to him as India’s greatest cheerleader, Brendan’s work bridges borders, opening opportunities and championing Indian talent worldwide.

Why These Misfits Matter

These individuals embody the misfit spirit: they’ve broken molds, faced challenges head-on, and transformed their experiences into platforms that uplift others. They remind us that being a misfit isn’t about fitting in; it’s about standing out and using that uniqueness to make a difference.

From building inclusive communities to guiding Indians through complex journeys, from fostering innovation to cheering on the next generation of leaders, these misfits have created pathways for those who need it most. They don’t just support Indians—they empower them, showing that distance and borders are no match for the will to create change.

Celebrating the Power of A Misfit

The world needs more misfits. More people willing to tackle challenges that others overlook, more people who turn personal trials into collective triumphs. Whether you’re an immigrant, an entrepreneur, or someone looking for inspiration, the journeys of these five misfits remind us of the power of persistence, the importance of community, and the courage it takes to be different.

Know more misfits who are making a difference for the Indian community worldwide? Tag them in the comments or share their stories—I’d love to celebrate them too!

As these remarkable individuals continue to inspire and impact lives, here’s to the misfits—those who dare to stand out, and in doing so, create change for us all.
