Flying to or from Bengaluru this February? Travelers should brace themselves for significant disruptions at Kempegowda International Airport (KIA). The biennial Aero India show, held at the nearby Yelahanka Air Force Station, will result in runway closures during specific hours, affecting flight schedules and passenger plans.

Schedule of Airport Closures

The Aero India show will run from February 10 to February 14, 2025, with closures beginning earlier. Here’s what travelers can expect:

  • February 5-8, 13-14: Both runways closed for six hours daily, split into two blocks: 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM and 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM.
  • February 9: Closure from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM.
  • February 10-12: Limited closure from 12:00 PM to 3:00 PM.

These closures coincide with the event’s aerial displays, which include business sessions for aviation professionals from February 10-12 and public access on February 13-14.

Impact on Flights and Passengers

Bengaluru Airport handles an average of 743 daily flight movements, with over 40 movements in peak hours. Such high traffic means disruptions are inevitable:

  • Flight Delays and Cancellations: Airlines are struggling to adjust schedules, especially for connecting flights.
  • Passenger Discomfort: Domestic and international transfer passengers will face challenges in rescheduling and rebooking flights.

Why the Delays in Communication?

Although the Aero India show was announced months ago, details about runway closures were released late. This delay leaves little time for airlines to adjust schedules and inform passengers, leading to last-minute changes.

What Should Passengers Do?

To minimize inconvenience, passengers are advised to:

  1. Stay Updated: Keep contact information current with airlines and travel agents to receive timely notifications.
  2. Plan Ahead: Avoid booking flights during the closure hours if possible.
  3. Monitor Alternatives: Consider rebooking through other airports if your travel is time-sensitive.

A Long-Term Issue?

Bengaluru Airport, the third largest in India, recently surpassed 40 million annual passengers and continues to grow. However, its proximity to Yelahanka Air Force Station makes it vulnerable to disruptions during events like Aero India.

Discussions have been ongoing about moving the event to a different location to reduce the impact on passengers and airlines. Yet, the infrastructure and space available at Yelahanka make it a preferred venue.

Looking Ahead

The 2025 disruption is unavoidable, but can better coordination among agencies ensure smoother operations for 2027 and beyond? As Bengaluru continues to grow as a global aviation hub, addressing such challenges will be crucial for maintaining business confidence and passenger satisfaction.

For now, travelers must plan proactively and stay informed to navigate the disruptions effectively.
