Ashutosh Rana and Sheeba Chadha Shine in This Breezy, Thought-Provoking Watch

Keep it simple, stupid. Sitcom fans might recognize this quote, but even for those who don’t, the philosophy holds true. Many films today get lost in unnecessary distractions like star cameos and exotic locations, overshadowing their core message. Thankfully, Kaushaljis vs Kaushal avoids that trap and delivers an engaging, heartfelt experience.

What is Kaushaljis vs Kaushal About?

Directed by debutant Seema Desai, the film poses an intriguing question—how would you react if your parents, after years of marriage, suddenly decided to divorce?

Yug Kaushal (Pavail Gulati) is embarrassed by his small-town roots and constantly frustrated by his parents, Sahil and Sangeeta (Ashutosh Rana and Sheeba Chadha), who argue all the time. In a heated moment, he suggests they take a ‘modern’ approach and simply move on—just as his generation does. To his shock, they take his advice seriously and decide to separate. Now, Yug’s world is turned upside down, especially since his girlfriend, Kiara Meena Bansal (Isha Talwar), values a stable, happy family. The rest of the story follows his struggle to deal with this unexpected twist in his life.

What Works

Seema Desai’s confident direction ensures the film doesn’t become preachy, which is often a risk when tackling generational themes. The film maintains a light-hearted tone for most of its runtime, making it a breezy and enjoyable watch.

Shot entirely in Noida and Kannauj, Kaushaljis vs Kaushal beautifully captures the charm of small-town life. The natural flow of the story and its steady pacing keep the audience engaged. The chemistry among the cast members is a strong point, making the characters’ emotions and struggles feel real.

Ashutosh Rana and Sheeba Chadha are exceptional, effortlessly portraying a couple struggling with unfulfilled dreams and loneliness. The film also subtly addresses empty nest syndrome, resonating deeply with parents who feel abandoned once their children move out.

What Doesn’t Work

The climax falls a little flat, missing the emotional punch needed to tie everything together. While Ashutosh Rana fits well into his fatherly role, his qawwali-loving character’s musical performances feel somewhat forced. Sheeba Chadha, as always, delivers convincingly. Pavail Gulati handles his role well, though Isha Talwar’s character lacks depth and impact.

Supporting actors Brijendra Kala and Gresha Kapoor add charm as the couple’s friends, but the film’s music is forgettable, failing to leave a lasting impression.

Kaushaljis vs Kaushal is a heartfelt and well-acted film that explores relationships, generational gaps, and the meaning of companionship with sincerity. While it isn’t groundbreaking, its simplicity and warmth make it worth a watch. If you go in without high expectations, you might just be pleasantly surprised.

Now streaming on Jio Hotstar.
