Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh!
Guru Nanak Jayanti, also known as Gurpurab or Guru Parv, is one of the holiest Sikh festivals celebrated worldwide. It marks the birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev Ji (1469–1539), the founder of Sikhism and the first of the ten Sikh Gurus.

In 2025, Guru Nanak Jayanti will be celebrated on November 5, bringing together millions of devotees in prayer, kirtan, seva (service), and community gatherings. Beyond being a festival, it is a spiritual awakening that reminds us of Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s timeless teachings of oneness, humility, equality, and devotion to God.

When Is Guru Nanak Jayanti 2025?

Guru Nanak Dev Ji was born on April 15, 1469, at Rai Bhoi di Talwandi (now Nankana Sahib, Pakistan). However, Sikhs observe his birthday according to the lunar calendar—on Kartik Purnima (the full moon day of Kartik month).

Significance of Guru Nanak Jayanti

The festival is not just about celebrating a birth anniversary but about living by Guru Nanak’s philosophy. His teachings were revolutionary in 15th-century India, challenging caste hierarchy, rituals, and inequality.

Guru Nanak Dev Ji emphasized three fundamental principles that remain relevant today:

  1. Naam Japna (Remembering God): Living a life centered around devotion and gratitude.
  2. Kirat Karni (Honest Living): Earning livelihood with integrity and hard work.
  3. Vand Chakna (Sharing with Others): Helping those in need through service and compassion.

These values form the foundation of Sikhism and inspire millions to live with kindness, fairness, and humility.

How Is Guru Nanak Jayanti 2025 Celebrated?

The festival usually lasts for three days, beginning with prayers and ending with all-night kirtan and langar. Major highlights include:

  • Akhand Path: A 48-hour continuous recitation of Guru Granth Sahib, starting two days before Gurpurab.
  • Nagar Kirtan: On the eve of Gurpurab, processions with devotional singing, Sikh flags (Nishan Sahib), and martial arts displays (Gatka) are held.
  • Prabhat Pheris: Early morning processions where devotees sing hymns through neighborhoods.
  • Gurdwara Services: Hymns like Asa Di Var and sermons on Guru Nanak’s life are recited.
  • Langar (Community Kitchen): A symbol of equality and seva, free meals are served to all, irrespective of caste, religion, or status.
  • Night Kirtan & Midnight Prayers: Celebrations peak at midnight—the believed hour of Guru Nanak’s birth—with devotional singing and prayers.

Guru Nanak Dev Ji: His Life and Philosophy

Guru Nanak Dev Ji was a spiritual leader, philosopher, poet, and reformer. At a time when India was divided by caste and religious orthodoxy, he preached universal brotherhood and divine oneness (Ik Onkar).

Some of his most transformative ideas include:

  • Oneness of God (Ek Onkar): God is one and for all humanity.
  • Equality for All: He opposed caste-based divisions and uplifted the marginalized.
  • Rejection of Rituals: True spirituality lies in good deeds, not empty rituals.
  • Service to Humanity (Seva): Helping others is equivalent to worshiping God.
  • Simple Living, High Thinking: Guru Nanak believed in honest work and a moral life.

His message was so powerful that it not only reshaped social and religious structures but also gave birth to Sikhism, later carried forward by the nine Sikh Gurus.

Why Guru Nanak’s Teachings Matter Today

In today’s world of rising inequality, conflict, and materialism, Guru Nanak’s philosophy is a guiding light:

  • His message of universal equality can combat casteism, racism, and discrimination.
  • His emphasis on honesty and hard work inspires ethical lifestyles.
  • His advocacy for selfless service encourages philanthropy and humanitarianism.
  • His focus on oneness and harmony promotes peace in a divided world.

Guru Nanak Jayanti 2025 is more than a festival—it is a reminder of timeless wisdom. Celebrating Guru Parv means embracing values of love, compassion, service, and equality.

As we mark this sacred day on November 5, 2025, let us not just honor Guru Nanak Dev Ji through rituals, but also strive to live by his teachings in our daily lives.

✨ May Waheguru’s blessings guide us toward peace, harmony, and selfless service.
