In 2025, Jivitputrika Vrat—also known as Jitiya Vrat—will be observed on Sunday, September 14, 2025.

  • Ashtami Tithi begins: September 14 at 5:04 AM
  • Ashtami Tithi ends: September 15 at 3:06 AM

On this sacred day, mothers undertake a strict nirjala upvas (fast without food and water) and pray with devotion to Lord Jimutavahana for the long life, good health, and prosperity of their children.

Significance of Jivitputrika Vrat

Jivitputrika Vrat is considered one of the most powerful and selfless fasts observed by Hindu mothers.

  • According to Hindu mythology, the vrat is associated with Lord Jimutavahana, who sacrificed himself to save the sons of others from danger. His blessings are believed to protect children from harm and grant them a life full of health, happiness, and prosperity.
  • The vrat is primarily celebrated in Bihar, Jharkhand, Eastern Uttar Pradesh, and parts of Nepal, where women gather in large groups near rivers and temples to perform the rituals together.
  • The spiritual essence of this vrat lies in a mother’s unconditional love and sacrifice, which is symbolized by the nirjala fast observed with unwavering faith.

Puja Vidhi (Rituals of Worship)

The rituals of Jivitputrika Vrat are deeply symbolic and highlight purity, devotion, and prayer:

  1. Morning Preparations – Begin the day with a holy bath and wear clean clothes. Offer water to the Sun God for blessings.
  2. Purification – Sprinkle Gangajal to purify the puja space.
  3. Setup – Place a clean cloth on a wooden platform and install the idol or image of Lord Jimutavahana.
  4. Lighting the Lamp – Light a ghee diya (lamp) to invoke divine energy.
  5. Recitation of Vrat Katha – Read or listen to the Jivitputrika Vrat Katha which narrates the tale of sacrifice and protection.
  6. Offerings (Bhog) – Fruits, flowers, sweets, and black sesame seeds (til) are offered during the puja.
  7. Prayer for Children – Mothers pray with folded hands for their children’s longevity, health, and prosperity.

What to Donate on Jivitputrika Vrat

Donation (daan) plays a crucial role in the vrat. Common donations include:

  • Food grains, seasonal fruits, and sweets
  • Clothes for women and children
  • Money and black sesame seeds (til)
  • Meals for Brahmins and the needy

Offering donations is believed to amplify the blessings of Lord Jimutavahana and strengthen the protective shield around children.

Cultural Importance of Jivitputrika Vrat

  • In rural Bihar and Jharkhand, women gather near rivers, especially the Kosi and Gandak, to observe rituals together. The riverbanks turn into vibrant sites of devotion, with folk songs narrating the tales of Lord Jimutavahana.
  • Communities treat this vrat as a festival of motherhood, celebrating the strength, patience, and love of mothers who willingly undergo such a strict fast for the well-being of their children.
  • The vrat is also an opportunity for families to pass down traditions, as younger women watch their elders perform the rituals and learn the stories behind them.

Jivitputrika Vrat 2025 is more than just a fast—it is a powerful spiritual tradition that symbolizes the selfless love of mothers and the divine bond between mother and child. With its combination of strict fasting, heartfelt prayers, and symbolic rituals, it stands as one of the most significant observances in Hindu culture.

As September 14 approaches, devotees in Bihar, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, and beyond will once again honor this vrat with faith, sacrifice, and devotion, keeping alive an age-old tradition of blessings and protection.
