Operation Safed Sagar, now streaming on Netflix, is a gripping six-episode series that brings to life the Indian Air Force’s crucial and lesser-known role in the Kargil War. Directed by Oni Sen and led by powerhouse performances from Jimmy Sheirgill and Siddharth, the series combines intense aerial combat with deeply human storytelling, offering audiences an emotionally rich and technically impressive war drama that honours the sacrifices made under some of the most difficult diplomatic constraints in Indian military history.

Operation Safed Sagar is a beautifully crafted war drama that tells the untold story of IAF pilots during the Kargil War, flying under the strict rule that they could never cross the Line of Control. Across six tightly paced episodes, the series balances intense, convincing aerial combat sequences with warm, personal moments between pilots and their families, anchored by outstanding performances from Jimmy Sheirgill and Siddharth. Director Oni Sen tells the story with restraint and authenticity, blending real archival footage with fictionalised drama, and the result is one of the most engaging and emotionally resonant Indian war series in recent memory. Currently streaming on Netflix, this is a must-watch for anyone who loves stirring, well-crafted military dramas.

Plot Summary

Set during the winter of 1999, Operation Safed Sagar tells the story of the Indian Air Force’s crucial role in the Kargil War, a chapter often overshadowed by the ground battle. The series opens with a gripping moment: Squadron Leader Ajay Ahuja’s jet is hit over the snow-capped peaks of Kargil on Day 24 of the war. The story then rewinds four months to when Wing Commander B.S. Dhanoa brings Ahuja to Bhatinda to train a fresh batch of pilots on the MiG-21 ahead of a wargame exercise.

From there, the series moves between two compelling threads: the personal lives, friendships and training of the IAF pilots, and the political manoeuvring on the other side of the border, where Pervez Musharraf plans a covert operation while Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif remains largely uninformed. When PM Vajpayee authorises airstrikes with one non-negotiable condition — the Line of Control cannot be crossed — the series skilfully shows how this constraint shaped one of India’s most difficult military operations.

Actor Performances

Jimmy Sheirgill delivers a career-defining performance as Wing Commander B.S. Dhanoa. He plays the role with quiet confidence and authority, keeping the character’s emotions carefully restrained without ever losing warmth, and makes every scene feel completely believable.

Siddharth is the emotional heart of the series as Squadron Leader Ajay Ahuja. He brings warmth and a philosophical calm to the character, and his most memorable lines land with real weight thanks to his heartfelt, layered performance.

Abhay Verma, Mihir Ahuja, Arnav Bhasin and Taruk Raina are wonderfully convincing as the young pilots-in-training. They bring energy, camaraderie and sincerity to every scene, whether in the cockpit or off duty, with Abhay and Mihir given especially well-developed character arcs.

Dia Mirza and Amrita Bagchi shine in roles that give them far more depth than the usual “wife” part allows, delivering moving, restrained performances that add genuine emotional resonance to the series.

Manu Rishi Chaddha and Vinay Pathak, as Musharraf and Nawaz Sharif respectively, bring nuance and conviction to their portrayals, while Adil Hussain and K.C. Shankar are equally impressive in their supporting roles. Barun Sobti and Sanjay Suri make their cameos count with strong, memorable appearances.

Technical Craft

Direction

Oni Sen directs with a steady, confident hand, keeping all six episodes tightly paced and consistently engaging. He wisely avoids excessive melodrama or jingoism, letting the story and the performances carry the emotional weight.

Cinematography

The aerial sequences over the snow-covered peaks of Kargil are genuinely breathtaking, capturing both the beauty and the danger of the terrain in a way that feels immersive and cinematic throughout.

Music

The background score enhances the drama without ever overwhelming it, while needle-drops help recreate the late-1990s setting beautifully, adding real emotional texture to key moments.

Editing

The editing is crisp and purposeful, keeping the combat sequences easy to follow while giving the quieter, character-driven scenes enough room to breathe.

Strengths & Weaknesses

Strengths:

  • Outstanding lead performances from Jimmy Sheirgill and Siddharth
  • Gripping, well-choreographed aerial combat sequences
  • Thoughtful blend of real archival footage with fictionalised storytelling
  • Strong emotional balance between personal moments and larger wartime conflict
  • Clear, engaging explanation of the diplomatic constraints IAF pilots operated under
  • Well-developed young pilot ensemble with genuine camaraderie

Minor Observations:

  • A few scenes involving Pakistan’s political leadership feel slightly more functional than fully fleshed out, though this barely registers against the series’ expansive scope

Final Verdict: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐5/5 stars

Operation Safed Sagar is a triumphant, deeply moving tribute to the IAF’s role in the Kargil War. With powerhouse performances, stunning aerial sequences and a story told with genuine restraint and authenticity, it stands as one of the finest Indian war dramas in recent memory. A must-watch on Netflix.
