Sree Vishnu returns with a Telugu comedy-drama set in a 1990s Naxalite-dominated village on the Andhra-Odisha border. Directed by debutant Janakiram Marella, Comrade Kalyan mixes romance, rebellion and a comedy of errors in one rustic package. Mahima Nambiar, Radikaa, Upendra, Shine Tom Chacko and Satya support the lead. This review covers the story, performances, technical work and our final verdict.

Comrade Kalyan is a lively rural entertainer that stands out for its unusual mix of romance, Naxalism and humour. Sree Vishnu leads with confident comic timing, and his chemistry with Satya gives the film some of its funniest moments. The ensemble, the authentic village setting and the production design add real charm. Some jokes rely on specific references, but the film has enough laughs and heart to be a satisfying watch. It’s a good pick for fans of Telugu comedy and period drama.

Plot Summary

Set in the 1990s, the film follows Kalyan (Sree Vishnu), who runs an old cinema theatre in a village dominated by Naxalites on the Andhra-Odisha border. He falls for Sitara (Mahima Nambiar) and tries to protect her from an unwanted marriage to Biswas (Upendra). In the process he gets drawn into a Naxalite group. Romance, policing and governance collide, and the film tells it as a comedy of errors that gives each side its say.

Performances

Sree Vishnu carries the film with ease. He is at his best in the comic portions, and his timing keeps the humour fresh even when the material is familiar. He also handles the shift in Kalyan’s journey with conviction.

Mahima Nambiar brings grace and warmth to Sitara. She makes the most of her screen time, and her sincerity adds emotional weight to the love story.

Upendra is a standout as Biswas. He brings energy and a strong presence, and every scene he is in gets livelier.

Radikaa is a treat to watch. She brings her usual command and charm, and her screen presence adds weight to the film.

Shine Tom Chacko is dependable and effective. He does very well with what he is given and adds a distinct flavour to the ensemble.

Satya is a delight as Sree Vishnu’s comic partner. Their chemistry is easily among the film’s liveliest elements, and it keeps the narrative moving through the slower stretches.

Technical Analysis

Direction

Janakiram Marella makes a promising debut with an unconventional premise. He balances romance, politics and humour, and he treats the opposing viewpoints fairly. The film’s ambition is its strength.

Cinematography

Sai Sriram’s visuals capture the rural landscape well. Some of the framing and compositions stand out, and they give the village its sense of place.

Music and Score

Vijay Bulganin’s music suits the film’s mood. It is a mix of a gentle melody in “Oriya Pilla” and the high-energy, revolutionary “Ettara Etthu”, and the songs support the story’s romantic and rebellious sides.

Editing

Chota K. Prasad’s editing keeps the comedy episodes moving. The 2 hr 25 min runtime remains manageable for a film with this many tonal shifts.

Production Design

The production design recreates the 1990s village convincingly and sets the atmosphere right from the opening scenes.
