In an ever-changing global investment landscape, Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) often seek secure, diversified, and manageable options to invest in India. One such strategic avenue is Multi Asset Allocation Funds. These mutual fund schemes offer the benefit of spreading investments across multiple asset classes such as equities, debt instruments, and commodities like gold—all within a single fund structure.

What Are Multi Asset Allocation Funds?

Multi Asset Allocation Funds are mutual funds that invest in at least three asset classes, with a regulatory minimum of 10% allocation in each. The most common mix includes equity (for growth), debt (for stability), and commodities (often gold, for inflation hedge and diversification). These funds follow a dynamic allocation strategy, which means fund managers actively rebalance the portfolio based on market conditions.

This approach allows investors to benefit from market opportunities while minimizing risk exposure. For example, in a bullish market, equity allocation might increase; during uncertain phases, the focus may shift to debt and gold for capital preservation.

Why Are They Ideal for NRIs?

For NRIs investing in India, these funds offer several tailored advantages:

1. Built-in Diversification

Instead of managing separate portfolios for different asset types, NRIs can achieve diversification through a single fund. This reduces the impact of poor performance in any one asset class.

2. Professional Management

Expert fund managers monitor markets and adjust allocations automatically, offering peace of mind for NRIs who may not actively track Indian market movements.

3. Tax-Efficiency

Multi asset funds simplify tax reporting. Although tax treatment depends on equity exposure, NRIs benefit from streamlined documentation and easier returns filing. Tax Deducted at Source (TDS) applies, but excess TDS can be claimed via return filing.

4. Moderate Risk with Consistent Returns

These funds have historically offered a balanced risk-return profile, with an average annualised return of around 12.4% over the past three years.

5. Exposure to Rupee Assets

Investing in Indian mutual funds also provides currency exposure that can be beneficial in long-term wealth planning.

Taxation for NRIs

The taxation of Multi Asset Allocation Funds varies based on equity allocation:

  • Equity-oriented (>65%): Gains up to ₹1.25 lakh are tax-free. Above this, short-term gains are taxed at 20%, long-term at 12.5%.
  • Mixed (35%-65%): Short-term gains are taxed per slab; long-term gains are taxed at 12.5%.
  • Non-equity (<35%): All gains taxed as per slab rate. No indexation benefit applies.

TDS is applicable on all gains for NRIs. Filing an Indian tax return can help reclaim excess deductions.

Key Factors to Consider Before Investing

Before choosing a multi asset fund, NRIs should evaluate:

  • Investment Goals: Is your priority growth, capital preservation, or income?
  • Risk Appetite: Match the fund’s allocation strategy with your personal risk tolerance.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Complete NRI KYC and adhere to FEMA guidelines.
  • Fund Performance & Costs: Check the fund manager’s track record, equity-debt mix, and expense ratio.
  • Liquidity: Understand redemption timelines, especially for emergency needs.

Multi Asset Allocation Funds provide NRIs a convenient and effective way to invest in India across asset classes. With professional rebalancing, regulated exposure, and stable returns, these funds serve as an ideal solution for wealth building, especially for those seeking moderate risk and long-term value.

While these funds can be a foundational component of your NRI investment strategy, always consult a certified financial advisor to align choices with your individual financial goals and tax obligations.
