Language: Telugu
Genre: Drama, Thriller
Rating: UA

In this Kuberaa Movie Review, we explore a film that merges realism with emotional depth, built upon powerful performances and a socially relevant narrative. Directed by Sekhar Kammula, the film marks a striking collaboration with Dhanush and Nagarjuna in leading roles, and it delivers far more than just cinematic thrills—it delivers substance.

Plot Overview: Between Greed and Goodness

The story opens with Neeraj Mitra (Jim Sarbh), a cunning industrialist who uncovers a rare oil reserve in the Bay of Bengal. His ambition to exploit this hidden treasure for wealth and power sets the stage for a high-stakes conspiracy. To execute the plan covertly, he enlists the help of Deepak (Nagarjuna), a disgraced yet principled CBI officer imprisoned for standing against corruption.

Deepak agrees reluctantly and recruits a team of beggars across India for the operation—believing they will draw no attention. Among them is Deva (Dhanush), a soft-spoken, innocent man unknowingly pulled into this dark mission. But when Deva uncovers the truth and escapes, a tense pursuit begins. Joined by Sameera (Rashmika Mandanna), he embarks on a journey of survival that challenges power, questions morality, and celebrates human resilience.

Performances: Soulful and Stellar

Dhanush is the beating heart of Kuberaa. As Deva, he delivers a masterclass in understated acting, capturing the purity, fear, and quiet courage of a man caught in forces beyond his understanding. It’s a transformative performance—subtle, moving, and award-worthy.

Nagarjuna, in one of his most complex roles, portrays Deepak with a calm intensity. Neither hero nor villain, Deepak is a man shaped by his circumstances, and Nagarjuna presents this moral ambiguity with remarkable depth. His scenes with Dhanush are some of the film’s emotional highlights.

Jim Sarbh, despite limited screen time, leaves a powerful impact as the calculating Neeraj. His performance is sleek and composed, with his final act radiating silent regret and cold resolve.

Rashmika Mandanna adds warmth and emotional balance. While her character isn’t central to the plot’s engine, her chemistry with Dhanush brings welcome softness to the gritty narrative.

Direction and Writing: A Bold Turn for Sekhar Kammula

Director Sekhar Kammula, known for his gentle, rooted storytelling, ventures into bold territory with Kuberaa. His take on corruption, poverty, and systemic manipulation is both grounded and poetic. The screenplay builds slowly but deliberately, balancing political intrigue with personal journeys.

The writing sparkles particularly in the final act, where layered character arcs, sharp dialogues, and ethical dilemmas come together for a powerful emotional payoff. Kuberaa doesn’t just tell a story—it invites the audience to reflect on the price of survival in an unjust world.

Visuals and Technical Craftsmanship: Real and Refined

Niketh Bommireddy’s cinematography deserves applause. The contrast between grimy street corners and expansive industrial settings is beautifully shot, reinforcing the film’s themes of inequality and exploitation.

Devi Sri Prasad’s background score elevates key moments without overwhelming them. His work complements the film’s mood, especially during chase sequences and emotional revelations.

The editing by Karthika Srinivas could have been tighter in the first half, but the final hour more than makes up for the slower opening. Production design and makeup add realism, particularly in the authentic depiction of the beggars’ world.

What Works

  • Dhanush’s emotionally rich performance
  • Nagarjuna’s layered portrayal of moral ambiguity
  • Well-crafted climax with philosophical weight
  • Realistic cinematography and mood-setting score
  • Social relevance woven into character arcs

What Could Have Been Better

  • Pacing in the first half feels uneven
  • Rashmika’s character could have had more narrative impact
  • Some repetition in exposition affects flow

Final Verdict: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (5/5 Stars)

Kuberaa is a deeply engaging and thoughtful film that raises powerful questions through unforgettable characters and stellar storytelling. With Dhanush at his finest, Nagarjuna in top form, and Sekhar Kammula crafting a layered, emotionally resonant narrative, this is cinema that transcends entertainment. A must-watch for those who seek meaning with their movie-going experience.
