Language: Hindi
Age Rating: U/A
Genre: Thriller, Supernatural, Mystery

In this Nikita Roy movie review, we explore a gripping thriller that dares to walk the razor’s edge between faith and fear, logic and lore. With a compelling narrative led by Sonakshi Sinha and a scene-stealing performance from Paresh Rawal, debutant director Kussh S. Sinha crafts a tight, atmospheric film that keeps you thinking long after the credits roll.

With an unsettling mystery at its core, Nikita Roy successfully blends social commentary, personal loss, and eerie psychological tension—setting a new standard for elevated supernatural thrillers in Indian cinema.

Plot: When Rationality Meets Shadows

Set in London, Nikita Roy follows the story of Nikita Roy (Sonakshi Sinha), a rationalist and strong-willed woman devoted to her brother, Sanal Roy (Arjun Rampal), who’s been investigating a mysterious spiritual figure named Amardev (Paresh Rawal).

When Sanal dies under suspicious circumstances, presumed to be suicide, Nikita refuses to accept the official version. Her personal grief soon transforms into a pursuit of truth. With the help of their mutual friend Jolly (Suhail Nayyar), she dives into a murky world of psychological manipulation, eerie coincidences, and inexplicable phenomena—all seemingly revolving around Amardev.

The deeper she investigates, the more her logical worldview begins to crack. What begins as a rational probe turns into a disturbing experience as she encounters haunted audio recordings, bizarre deaths, and a corrupt police system. The question isn’t just “Who is behind this?”—it’s “What is behind this?”

Performances: Ensemble Brilliance

Sonakshi Sinha delivers one of her most mature and restrained performances to date. As Nikita, she embodies a woman struggling to maintain her belief in reason amidst an avalanche of emotional and psychological horror. Her inner conflict is conveyed with nuanced intensity, adding layers to a character that could have easily been reduced to archetype.

Paresh Rawal is chillingly charismatic as Amardev. With minimal gestures and a sinister smile, he commands every frame he’s in. His portrayal of a spiritual leader teetering between mystic and manipulator is both captivating and disturbing—an antagonist who whispers more than he roars, and that makes him far more terrifying.

Arjun Rampal appears briefly but leaves a lasting impression. His role as Sanal adds emotional gravity and helps ground the film in its human themes. Rampal’s restrained performance adds both vulnerability and conviction to the mystery.

Suhail Nayyar as Jolly adds emotional complexity to the narrative. His unrequited affection for Nikita and evolving involvement in the investigation are portrayed with quiet sincerity.

Kalliroi Tziafeta as Freya, despite her short screen time, makes a memorable impact. Her transformation—from poised to unhinged—is sudden, shocking, and brilliantly performed, amplifying the film’s eerie tone.

Direction and Narrative: A Confident Debut

Director Kussh S. Sinha makes a remarkable debut with Nikita Roy, refusing to fall into the trappings of clichéd horror. Instead of jump scares or over-the-top spectacle, the film thrives on psychological suspense, smart writing, and emotional stakes.

The storytelling leans Western in its structure—tight, character-driven, and free from unnecessary melodrama. The screenplay, reworked from an original concept by Pavan Kirpalani, remains focused and layered. There’s a sense of urgency and unease in each act, but what stands out is how the film maintains its tone: sophisticated, cerebral, and deeply unsettling.

The climax is deliberately swift and cerebral—perhaps a touch too brisk for mainstream audiences—but it’s technically sharp and thematically fitting.

Cinematography and Sound Design: Atmospheric Precision

The London setting is used with purpose, adding a cold, detached mood that mirrors Nikita’s mental state. The production design is sleek and immersive, avoiding horror clichés for a more grounded look.

The sound design plays a key role in maintaining tension—especially in scenes involving Sanal’s recordings and Freya’s cottage. While the film’s background score stays subtle, it tightens its grip when needed without ever overpowering the narrative.

Strengths and Shortcomings

✅ What Works:

  • Sonakshi Sinha’s refined performance
  • Paresh Rawal’s hypnotic villainy
  • Crisp, intelligent direction from a debut filmmaker
  • A tightly written screenplay with minimal fat
  • Haunting atmosphere without clichés

❌ Where It Stumbles:

  • Climax may feel too swift or abstract for some viewers
  • A few supporting characters could have used more depth

Cultural Relevance and Impact

Nikita Roy isn’t just about supernatural thrills—it’s also a commentary on blind faith, manipulation, and the grey space between logic and belief. In a time when society often finds itself torn between scientific reasoning and spiritual interpretation, the film asks: What happens when belief becomes dangerous?

It’s rare to find an Indian thriller that walks this line so intelligently, without ever becoming preachy or formulaic.

Final Verdict: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️½ (4.5/5 Stars)

Nikita Roy is a sharp, stylish, and thought-provoking thriller that balances intellect with emotion, skepticism with suspense. With powerhouse performances, especially from Sonakshi Sinha and Paresh Rawal, and a debut director in full control of his vision, the film is a standout in the genre.

Whether you’re in it for mystery, psychological depth, or a fresh cinematic voice—Nikita Roy delivers with chilling precision.

Should You Watch It?

Absolutely. If you’re a fan of thrillers that make you think, question, and feel uneasy in the best way, Nikita Roy is a must-watch. It’s not just a film—it’s an experience that lingers.
