    About the American Legion Oratorical Contest

    Since its inception in 1938, the American Legion Oratorical Contest has been helping students gain a deeper understanding of the U.S. Constitution while honing their public speaking abilities. The contest challenges students to write and deliver speeches on constitutional topics, fostering a sense of civic duty, responsibility, and leadership in the nation’s youth. The program is not only a way to earn scholarship funds but also a platform for students to become more engaged citizens who can actively contribute to society.

    • Eligibility: High school students (grades 9-12)
    • Level of Study: College-bound high school students
    • Location: U.S. citizens across the United States
    • Award: Scholarships ranging from $2,000 to $25,000
    • Deadline: Varies by state (usually in early spring)

    Scholarship Benefits

    The American Legion High School Oratorical Contest offers significant financial rewards for students with excellent public speaking and research skills:

    • First-place National Winner: $25,000 scholarship
    • Second-place National Winner: $22,500 scholarship
    • Third-place National Winner: $20,000 scholarship

    In addition, each individual state winner certified into and participating in the first round of the national contest receives a $2,000 scholarship. If a first-round winner advances but does not qualify for the finals, they receive an additional $2,000 scholarship.

    • State and Local Prizes: Scholarships can also be awarded by posts, districts, counties, and departments during earlier levels of competition.

    The scholarships are eligible for use at accredited trade schools, colleges, or universities within the United States. Recipients will receive their awards as two-party checks (issued to both the student and the school). The total scholarship amount must be utilized within eight (8) years of receiving the award, with exceptions for active military duty or religious missions.

    Additionally, the winner of the National Oratorical Contest will travel to join the Youth Champion Delegation of The American Legion, which is honored each August at the annual National Convention of The American Legion.

    Eligibility Criteria

    To apply for the American Legion High School Oratorical Contest Scholarship, applicants must meet the following criteria:

    • High School Students: Applicants must be high school students in grades 9-12.
    • Age Requirement: Contestants must be under the age of 20 as of the contest year.
    • U.S. Citizenship: Applicants must be U.S. citizens or legal residents.
    • Commitment to the Contest: Students must prepare a speech on one of the topics related to the U.S. Constitution (the contest usually includes a speech on the Constitution and a prepared oration on a pre-selected topic).
    • Previous Winners: Past national winners of the American Legion Oratorical Contest are not eligible.

    Step-by-Step Application Process

    To apply for the American Legion Oratorical Contest Scholarship, follow these essential steps:

    1. Research the Contest Topics:

    • The contest requires students to write and deliver two speeches. The first speech is on the U.S. Constitution, and the second is an assigned topic chosen by the contest organizers.
