Brendan’s Journey to Co-Founding 2AM VC
Brendan’s association with India began in 2019. Having spent nearly a decade as a founder, he had already worked closely with Indian engineers and product managers in Silicon Valley. However, it was a serendipitous meeting with Hershel Mehta that truly sparked his deep interest in the Indian startup ecosystem. Hershel, an investor in Indian and US startups, introduced Brendan to his cousin Sanjay Mehta, who had launched 100X.VC—India’s largest pre-seed accelerator.
Following an invitation from Hershel, Brendan attended his first demo day at IIT Bombay in 2019. His intuition led him to make a life-changing decision: to board a plane to Mumbai and witness firsthand the innovation brewing in India. This trip marked the beginning of his deep-rooted connection with India’s burgeoning startup culture and laid the foundation for 2AM VC.
Brendan’s Investment Strategy and Criteria
As an investor, Brendan follows a rigorous process when evaluating potential startups. His approach involves extensive research, networking with other investors and founders, and identifying emerging market opportunities. Here are some of the key factors he considers:
1. Market Potential
- Focuses on startups that target large Total Addressable Markets (TAMs).
- Seeks businesses addressing significant pain points in India.
- Looks for industries poised for disruption due to economic growth and increased liquidity.
2. Founder Attributes
- Passionate and determined entrepreneurs who exhibit a strong vision.
- Founders who have achieved substantial milestones with minimal resources.
- Individuals with prior startup experience or a deep understanding of their industry.
- Entrepreneurs who can rally a team and inspire others to believe in their mission.
Brendan’s philosophy is that great companies are built by visionary leaders who can do more with less—a trait he often identifies in Indian founders.
Brendan’s Perception of India’s Startup Ecosystem
Before visiting India, Brendan viewed the country primarily as a global IT hub with exceptional technical talent. However, his firsthand experiences significantly altered his perspective. He realized that India was not just a backend service provider but a thriving entrepreneurial hub teeming with innovation.
The turning point for Brendan came when major global funds like Tiger Global and SoftBank began investing heavily in Indian startups such as Flipkart and OYO. He recognized parallels between India’s current growth trajectory and China’s tech boom of the early 2000s.
During his visit to IIT Bombay, he was astounded by the sheer talent, enthusiasm, and drive of Indian entrepreneurs. The startup culture in India reminded him of Silicon Valley’s vibrancy, reaffirming his belief in the country’s potential.
The Concept of ‘Jugaad’ in Indian Entrepreneurship
A fascinating aspect of Indian entrepreneurship is the concept of ‘Jugaad’—a term that encapsulates innovation through resourcefulness. Jugaad represents the ability to find creative solutions despite limited resources, a trait often observed in Indian startups.
Brendan sees this mindset as a competitive advantage. Entrepreneurs in India have a knack for overcoming challenges with minimal capital, a quality he highly values in founders. This frugality and problem-solving attitude make Indian startups uniquely resilient and capable of scaling efficiently.
Brendan’s Vision for Indian Startups
Brendan Rogers firmly believes that India is on the cusp of a global startup revolution. With an increasing number of Indian entrepreneurs solving real-world problems and global investors recognizing the country’s potential, the ecosystem is set for exponential growth.
Through 2AM VC, Brendan continues to support and mentor promising Indian startups, leveraging his global experience to help them scale. His passion for India and unwavering belief in its entrepreneurs make him a key player in shaping the country’s startup landscape.
