Language: Tamil, Hindi, Kannada & Telugu
Age Rating: A
Genre: Action, Thriller, Mass Entertainment

In this Coolie movie review, we explore how director Lokesh Kanagaraj delivers a larger-than-life entertainer that celebrates the charisma of Rajinikanth, while giving enough room for other talented stars to shine. With high-voltage action, powerful cameos, and an emotional storyline, Coolie emerges as one of the most electrifying tributes to Thalaivar in recent years.

Plot: When Justice Unlocks the Past

The story revolves around Deva aka Devaraj (Rajinikanth), the magnetic owner of Deva Mansion, a safe haven for students. His world turns upside down when his close friend Rajshekhar (Sathyaraj) suddenly passes away — only for Deva to discover that his death wasn’t natural but the result of a violent crime.

Determined to seek justice, Deva dives into a smuggling nexus in Visakhapatnam, run by the ruthless Simon (Nagarjuna) and his loyal aide Dayal (Soubin Shahir). In the process, he not only hunts for the killer but also unlocks hidden chapters of his own past — secrets that connect his present struggles with unfinished battles from long ago.

Performances: A Stellar Ensemble

Rajinikanth as Devaraj

Rajinikanth is magnetic from the very first frame. His style, charm, and effortless screen presence remind audiences why he is a living legend. The de-aged flashback portions are handled brilliantly, adding nostalgia while amplifying the larger-than-life appeal. His emotional beats with Sathyaraj are heartfelt, while his mass sequences explode with energy.

Sathyaraj as Rajshekhar

Sathyaraj’s dignified presence anchors the narrative. His chemistry with Rajinikanth, especially in the flashback portions, evokes a wave of nostalgia — two legends sharing the screen after four decades is nothing short of cinematic magic.

Nagarjuna as Simon

Nagarjuna revels in his villainy, delivering a controlled yet menacing performance. His portrayal of the crime lord Simon is layered, combining charm with ruthlessness, making him one of the most memorable antagonists in Lokesh’s films.

Soubin Shahir as Dayal

Soubin Shahir is another masterstroke of casting. His screen presence lingers long after his scenes, adding grit and unpredictability to Simon’s empire.

Rachita Ram

Rachita Ram is the film’s surprise package — her role is impactful and she commands attention every time she appears. Her action sequence is executed with grace and intensity, making her one of the unexpected highlights of the film.

Upendra

Upendra brings swagger and silent strength as Rajinikanth’s formidable ally. He matches Thalaivar’s charisma with his own powerful aura, particularly in the high-octane confrontations.

Shruti Haasan

Shruti Haasan’s character forms the emotional core of the story. She grounds the narrative, providing balance amidst the action-heavy sequences and ensuring that the film never loses touch with its human element.

Cameos & Special Appearances

The film is peppered with cameos that are not only well-placed but also integral to the story. From Aamir Khan’s intriguing cameo to unexpected appearances that tie into the larger universe, each addition feels purposeful rather than gimmicky.

Direction: Lokesh Kanagaraj’s Mass & Class Fusion

Lokesh Kanagaraj directs with the enthusiasm of a Rajini fan while maintaining his own distinct voice. The first half may linger on fan service with songs, punch dialogues, and stylish introductions, but the second half shifts gears into tight, thrilling storytelling. He strikes a fine balance between nostalgia and fresh cinematic choices, ensuring Coolie works for both hardcore fans and general audiences.

Technical Brilliance: Music, Visuals & Action

  • Cinematography: The bustling port city of Vizag, the neon-lit streets, and the intense fight sequences are captured with flair, immersing the audience in a vibrant, high-stakes world.
  • Action: The stunts are raw, dynamic, and crowd-pleasing, blending larger-than-life spectacle with grounded intensity.
  • Music: Anirudh Ravichander once again elevates the film with pulsating background score and foot-tapping songs. His music ensures both whistle-worthy mass moments and smooth emotional beats.

Strengths and Shortcomings

What Works

  • Rajinikanth’s timeless charisma and commanding presence
  • Strong performances from Nagarjuna, Soubin Shahir, Rachita Ram, and Upendra
  • Emotional weight added by Sathyaraj and Shruti Haasan
  • Thrilling cameos that enhance rather than distract
  • Lokesh Kanagaraj’s confident blend of mass appeal and tight storytelling
  • Electrifying music and stylish action sequences

What Could Have Been Better

  • The first half could have been tighter, with fewer detours into fan-service territory

Final Verdict: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (5/5 Stars)

Coolie is a thrilling, spectacular, and nostalgic celebration of Rajinikanth’s legacy, amplified by Lokesh Kanagaraj’s sharp direction and a stellar supporting cast. With mass appeal, gripping action, and emotional resonance, it is one of the most entertaining films of the year.

Should You Watch It?
Absolutely. Whether you’re a die-hard Thalaivar fan or a casual moviegoer, Coolie promises a blockbuster experience packed with energy, style, and soul.
