Streaming on: Lionsgate Play
Language: English, Hindi
Genre: Drama, Romance

Plot Summary

Four Years Later brings to life the story of Sridevi and Yash, a young Indian couple living in Australia, trying to navigate the complex terrain of marriage, self-identity, and societal expectations. What begins as a romantic promise slowly unravels into an introspective journey as the couple learns that love alone isn’t enough to sustain a lifelong partnership.

This eight-episode Australian-Indian series stands out for its grounded narrative, rich character development, and non-linear storytelling that traces the emotional highs and lows of the protagonists.

Performances That Speak Volumes

Shahana Goswami as Sridevi is absolutely captivating. She brings a quiet strength and layered vulnerability to her character, portraying a woman who seeks more than just love—she wants agency, connection, and peace.

Akshay Ajit Singh delivers a deeply human performance as Yash. His struggle with familial pressure, gender roles, and personal inadequacy is heartbreakingly real. Together, Goswami and Singh build a compelling chemistry that makes you root for both, individually and as a couple.

Taj Aldeeb (Jamal) and Roy Joseph (Arun) offer heartfelt support to the narrative, while Kate Box as Gabs adds poignancy to her scenes despite limited screen time.

Direction and Writing

Directors Mohini Herse and Fadia Abboud have embraced a narrative style that values introspection over melodrama. The non-linear format isn’t jarring—instead, it allows viewers to peel back the emotional layers of the lead characters gradually.

The writing team, led by Mithila Gupta, Nicole Reddy, and S Shakthidharan, deserves special mention for crafting dialogues that feel lived-in, not written. Their sensitive treatment of themes like emotional disconnect, mental health, and gender dynamics sets this series apart.

Themes & Visuals

Four Years Later explores more than just marriage. It questions parenting expectations, societal conditioning, and what it truly means to grow—individually and together. Rather than offering clichéd solutions, the show focuses on real conversations, emotional maturity, and the slow evolution of love.

Visually, the show is minimalist but effective, using everyday urban backdrops in Australia to emphasize isolation and intimacy in equal measure.

Strengths

  • Stellar performances, especially by Goswami and Singh
  • Authentic, rooted storytelling with universal appeal
  • Emotionally intelligent writing
  • Refreshingly honest portrayal of marriage

Shortcomings

  • Some episodes may feel repetitive in pacing
  • Supporting characters, though well-acted, could have had more screen time

Final Verdict: ⭐⭐⭐⭐½ (4.5/5)

Four Years Later is a heartfelt exploration of love, identity, and emotional resilience. It doesn’t offer fairytale resolutions but instead serves as a mirror to modern relationships. For viewers who appreciate nuanced storytelling and deeply human performances, this series is a must-watch.
