Hartalika Teej 2025 will be celebrated on August 26, 2025 (Bhadrapada Shukla Tritiya). This vrat is one of the most sacred and rigorous fasts observed by Hindu women in devotion to Goddess Parvati and Lord Shiva.

According to mythology, Goddess Parvati herself was the first to observe this vrat, which blessed her with Lord Shiva as her husband. Since then, women—both married and unmarried—observe Hartalika Teej with faith, prayers, and discipline.

  • Married women fast for the long life and well-being of their husbands.
  • Unmarried girls pray for a suitable life partner.

Preparations Before the Fast

  • On the eve of Hartalika Teej, women eat a satvik meal (pure vegetarian).
  • Cucumber is traditionally consumed, as it helps prevent dehydration during the fast.
  • Women clean their homes, prepare puja items, and keep ready suhag samagri (symbols of marital bliss).

The Sankalp (Vow of Fasting)

The vrat begins before sunrise. Devotees wear clean or new clothes and take the vow by chanting:

“Uma Maheshwara Sayujya Siddhaye Haritalika Vratam Aham Karishye.”

  • Most women keep a nirjala vrat (without food and water).
  • Once undertaken, the vrat must be observed every year without a break.

Rituals and Puja Vidhi of Hartalika Teej 2025

  1. Collection of Leaves: In the afternoon, devotees collect 16 types of leaves to offer Lord Shiva.
  2. Jagran and Puja: The puja starts in pradosh kaal (evening) and continues through the night with devotional bhajans, Teej katha recitals, and prayers.
  3. Idols: Clay or sand idols of Shiva, Parvati, and Ganesha are made and worshipped.
  4. Offerings:
    • Lord Ganesha is worshipped first.
    • Shiva-Parvati are worshipped with shodashopchar rituals, including panchamrit, bel patra, flowers, and suhag items.
    • Goddess Parvati is offered sindoor, bangles, and cosmetics as symbols of marital bliss.
  5. Adornments: Women wear solah shringar (16 adornments of a married woman) before performing the rituals.
  6. Prasad: Devotees prepare and offer halwa and cucumber as prasad.

The fast is usually broken after midnight by consuming cucumber, and the next morning women apply sindoor after offering it to Goddess Parvati.
