As an NRI parent, ensuring your child’s Indian passport is valid and up to date is not just a formality—it’s a necessity. Whether it’s for international travel, visa applications, or identification purposes abroad, a valid passport ensures your child’s smooth access to essential services. The Government of India, in partnership with agencies like VFS Global, has made the renewal process easier for families living outside India. Here’s everything you need to know about renewing an Indian passport for your child from anywhere in the world.

Why Timely Passport Renewal Matters for NRI Kids

Keeping your child’s passport current helps avoid last-minute travel hassles and legal complications. A valid Indian passport not only enables international travel but also serves as a critical identity document for Indian nationals living abroad. Moreover, holding an expired passport could affect the child’s eligibility for certain benefits and might even complicate NRI status documentation.

Step-by-Step Process to Renew a Child’s Indian Passport

If Renewing Within India:

  1. Visit the Passport Seva website and complete the online application form.
  2. Upload supporting documents and pay the applicable fees.
  3. Book an appointment at your nearest Passport Seva Kendra (PSK).
  4. Visit the PSK with your child and original documents for verification.
  5. Once approved, the new passport will be mailed to your registered address or made available for collection.

If Renewing From Abroad:

  1. Register on the Passport Seva Portal and fill in the application.
  2. Submit the form to generate an Application Reference Number (ARN).
  3. Visit the VFS Global portal, register, and complete the required steps.
  4. Choose your consular jurisdiction and courier service.
  5. Pay the applicable fees and print the completed forms.
  6. Submit your application and supporting documents to VFS within 15 days.
  7. After processing, the renewed passport will be delivered to your overseas address.
