The White House attributed the worsening crisis in US air travel to Democrats, citing a funding gap at the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) leading to staff shortages and security risks at airports. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt highlighted that 500 TSA officers had resigned recently, with many more calling in sick due to payment issues. This situation has strained the aviation system, causing security wait times of over three hours at major airports nationwide.

The morale among Transportation Security Administration (TSA) staff has significantly declined, posing what Leavitt termed as an “unacceptable, heightened security risk.” She criticized Democrats in Congress for rejecting funding for DHS multiple times, accusing them of engaging in “reckless political games.” President Donald Trump signed a memorandum to ensure TSA workers receive pay and benefits despite the funding deadlock, using available funds related to TSA operations for compensation.

While the temporary measure aims to provide relief, Leavitt emphasized that the situation would not normalize until Democrats fully fund the agency. The White House views this as a national security emergency, given the crucial role of TSA officers in airport security. The funding impasse has exacerbated the impact of staff shortages and long wait times amid high travel demand at major US airports, with the administration linking the issue to broader immigration enforcement disagreements.
