Language: Telugu
Age Rating: UA
Genre: Teen Drama, Comedy, Romance

In Little Hearts, debutant director Sai Marthand crafts a lighthearted yet nostalgic teen drama set in the mid-2010s, just before smartphones and cheap data changed everything. The story revolves around Nalli Akhil Kumar (Mouli Tanuj Prasanth), a below-average student coerced into pursuing engineering by his father (Rajiv Kanakala).

At a coaching institute, Akhil meets Khatyayani (Shivani Nagaram), a fellow struggler from the BiPC stream, and sparks of romance begin to fly. But when an unexpected revelation complicates his feelings, Akhil is forced to navigate love, friendship, and parental expectations—all while trying to figure out what he truly wants.

The film is less about plot twists and more about the vibrant world it builds—from soda shops and kachori stalls to Facebook profile gags, Vice City cheat codes, and Baahubali references. Little Hearts becomes a cinematic time capsule for anyone who grew up in the pre-Jio era.

Performances: An Ensemble that Shines

  • Mouli Tanuj Prasanth carries the film with an easy charm, perfectly capturing the awkwardness and confusion of an average student struggling under family pressure.
  • Shivani Nagaram is a delight as Khatyayani, blending innocence with quiet strength, and her chemistry with Mouli feels unforced and authentic.
  • Jai Krishna injects comic energy into every scene as Madhu, delivering some of the film’s most memorable one-liners.
  • Rajiv Kanakala strikes the right balance as the stern but ultimately caring father, while Akhil’s mother’s dry humor adds unexpected warmth.

Even smaller characters—from Akhil’s brother to background classmates—are given their moments, ensuring the humor and heart remain consistent throughout.

Direction and Tone: Fun, Nostalgic, and Relatable

As a debut, Sai Marthand displays confidence and clarity of vision. His attention to detail—the hairstyles, the college gags, the ABVP strikes—creates an authentic setting. What elevates the film is its balance between comedy and emotion.

While the story is straightforward, the humor keeps the film lively, and the nostalgia resonates with millennials who lived through this era. The second half does stretch slightly, and the climax feels a bit rushed, but the overall tone remains consistent and engaging.

Cinematography and Soundtrack: Capturing the Era

  • Cinematography (Suriya Balaji): A vibrant mix of drone shots, campus visuals, and intimate frames that highlight both the fun and struggles of student life.
  • Music (Sinjith Yerramilli): Youthful and catchy, the songs seamlessly complement the film’s mood.
  • Editing (Sreedhar Sompally): While crisp in the first half, the pacing could have been tighter toward the end.
  • Costume & Styling: With nods to Telugu cinema fashion trends of the time—like Akhil channeling Allu Arjun and Ram Charan—the design choices root the film in its period.

Strengths and Shortcomings

What Works

✔ Relatable nostalgia from the pre-Jio era
✔ Natural performances and sparkling chemistry between the leads
✔ Engaging comedy from Jai Krishna and supporting cast
✔ Smart cultural details and social observations

Where It Stumbles

✘ Story simplicity shows in the second half
✘ Climax feels hurried and underdeveloped

Cultural Relevance and Impact

Little Hearts doesn’t try to reinvent Telugu teen dramas, but it succeeds by celebrating a specific moment in time that millennials hold close to their hearts. From parental pressure to societal stereotypes, the film reflects experiences that remain relevant even today. By packaging them with humor and heart, it appeals across generations.

Final Verdict: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (4.5/5 Stars)

Little Hearts is a fun, nostalgic, and heartwarming entertainer that thrives on its relatable humor, lively performances, and authentic setting. While its simple story may feel stretched at times, the film more than makes up for it with charm, laughter, and a deep sense of familiarity.

Should You Watch It?

Absolutely. If you want to relive the quirks of campus life before the smartphone revolution—or simply enjoy a breezy teen drama filled with humor and heart—Little Hearts is the perfect watch.
