Kolkata, June 24 (IANS) The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Tuesday informed the Calcutta High Court that its investigation team probing the ghastly rape & murder of a woman junior doctor of state-run R.G. Kar Medical College within the hospital premises in August last year have no opposition to the plea by the victim’s parents to survey the crime scene.
On Monday, the counsel of the victim’s parents, senior advocate Phiroze Edulji, filed a petition at the single-judge bench of Justice Tirthankar Ghosh with two appeals, the first being for a fast-track hearing in the matter and the second being the plea of the parents to survey the crime scene.Considering that the CBI is still investigating the larger conspiracy behind the rape and murder, the bench sought the opinion of the central agency as regards the plea from the victim’s parents in surveying the crime scene. On Tuesday, the CBI counsel informed the court that their investigating officials have no objection to that particular plea of the victim’s parents. Thereafter, Justice Ghosh directed the victim’s parents to make a written application to the court in the matter.Currently, the matter of ghastly rape and murder is being heard at three different courts. The first is at the trial court in Kolkata, which earlier this year sentenced civic volunteer Sanjay Roy, the sole convict in the crime of rape and murder, to life imprisonment. The current hearing at the trial court is about the larger conspiracy in the crime of altering and tampering with the evidence during the initial phase of investigation by Kolkata Police before the charge of the probe was handed over to the CBI.Two separate cases related to the matter are before the Calcutta High Court, one the plea by the victim’s parents seeking a fresh investigation of the crime of rape and murder and the second related to the CBI’s appeal seeking a death sentence for the convict. At the same time, a hearing on the matter is also going on at the Supreme Court. The CBI had submitted four status reports to the trial court on the progress of its investigation in the matter of the larger conspiracy behind the crime. However, the counsel of the victim’s family had earlier accused the agency of playing with words in their subsequent status reports. The CBI had also been accused of conducting the probe in a lackadaisical manner since the beginning.–IANSsrc/vd
Amaravati, May 21 (IANS) Prime Minister Narendra Modi brought recognition to Yoga across the world, said Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu on Wednesday. He termed Yoga India’s gift to the world and stated that all countries are conducting Yoga programmes. He observed that Yoga is not confined to a few people or a few regions. The Chief Minister was talking to media persons after launching ‘Yogandhra 2025’, a month-long state-wide Yoga movement. The campaign will culminate in the 11th International Yoga Day celebrations in Visakhapatnam on June 21, in which Prime Minister Modi will participate.CM Naidu, who also launched the ‘Yogandhra’ website, called for making Yoga a part of everyone’s life.He said people should practice Yoga to overcome stress. The Chief Minister remarked that Yoga is not a one-day programme for an event or photos.”This is a programme that brings a remarkable change in everyone. We should take Yoga forward so that it becomes a part of our lifestyle,” he said.CM Naidu said that at least two crore people should participate in ‘Yogandhra’. The target is to give certificates to 10 lakh people. He announced that there will be a daily one-hour Yoga session in schools across the state. The Chief Minister said 5 lakh people will participate in the International Yoga Day programme to be held in Visakhapatnam on June 21, from RK Beach to Bhogapuram.Earlier, the state government said it aims to set a new Guinness World Record for the largest gathering for a yoga session at one place, with about 2.5 lakh participating in the session at Visakhapatnam. In 2023, Surat hosted a yoga session with 1.53 lakh participants at one location, setting a new Guinness World Record. The Andhra Pradesh government now plans to surpass that record with the event at Visakhapatnam. The officials are making arrangements for approximately 2.5 lakh people to participate in Yoga from RK Beach to Bheemunipatnam Beach. They informed the Chief Minister at a review meeting last week that 68 locations have been identified for the event, providing capacity for 2,58,948 participants. The Chief Minister had suggested involving up to 5 lakh people by organising yoga sessions across all suitable locations from RK Beach to Srikakulam along the coastline.–IANSms/svn

New Delhi, May 21 (IANS) A team of scientists at the Institute of Advanced Study in Science and Technology (IASST), an autonomous institute of the Department of Science and Technology (DST), has found drugs with potential to treat neurodegenerative disorders — a major global health challenge. In the study, published in the Journal Drug Discovery Today, the team highlighted the potential of peptidomimetics to treat neurodegenerative diseases, like Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, by promoting neuronal growth and survival.Peptidomimetic drugs — or synthetic molecules that mimic the structure of natural proteins — can be repurposed to provide an effective therapeutic strategy to treat neurodegenerative diseases by promoting neuronal growth and survival. While neurotrophins, proteins crucial for neuronal survival and function, have shown promise as potential treatments, their instability and rapid degradation have hindered their therapeutic application.IASST scientists have been exploring peptidomimetics, synthetic compounds designed to mimic neurotrophins, as a potential solution to these limitations.”Neurotrophin peptidomimetics are developed to target specific biological functions and can be valuable tools in drug discovery, especially when natural peptides have limitations like poor oral bioavailability or susceptibility to degradation,” said the team led by Prof. Ashis K. Mukherjee.”One of the significant advantages of peptidomimetics is their improved stability and bioavailability compared to endogenous neurotrophins. This means they can be delivered more effectively to the brain and maintain their therapeutic activity for a longer duration,” the team added. In addition, peptidomimetics can be designed to be more specific to their target receptors, reducing the risk of side effects. The research focused on understanding the signaling pathways involved in neuronal growth and survival, the potential pharmacological targets of peptidomimetics, and their therapeutic applications for neurodegenerative diseases. The team also explored the possibility of repurposing existing peptidomimetic drugs for other diseases, such as cancer, and the potential for developing new drug prototypes based on neurotrophins mimetics. As research progresses, the team said that peptidomimetics could become a key therapeutic strategy, offering new hope for managing and treating neurodegenerative disorders for future generations.–IANSrvt/
