One of Indian cinema’s most iconic films, Sholay, is making a historic return — this time on a global stage. The restored version of Sholay is all set to have its world premiere at the Il Cinema Ritrovato Festival in Bologna, Italy, on June 27, 2025.

This restored edition is not just a technical enhancement; it’s a cultural milestone. As the legendary film turns 50, fans across the globe will get to experience Sholay as it was originally envisioned by director Ramesh Sippy — complete with the original ending and deleted scenes that were never seen before by audiences.

A Cinematic Time Capsule Returns

First released on August 15, 1975, Sholay redefined Hindi cinema with its gripping narrative, unforgettable dialogues, and larger-than-life characters. Starring Amitabh Bachchan, Dharmendra, Sanjeev Kumar, Hema Malini, and Jaya Bachchan, the film became a genre-defining blend of action, drama, and friendship.

The restored version of Sholay, a collaborative effort between Film Heritage Foundation and Sippy Films Pvt. Ltd., reintroduces vital sequences that were originally removed following censorship guidelines — including the controversial climax where Thakur avenges his family by killing Gabbar Singh, rather than handing him over to the police.

Stars Reflect on a Legendary Journey

As the film gears up for its grand international re-release, the original cast and creators have shared heartfelt reflections.

Amitabh Bachchan described the experience of filming Sholay as “unforgettable,” adding that the film’s journey from initial struggles to legendary status was “an emotional rollercoaster.” He hopes that the film continues to resonate with newer generations, even after five decades.

Dharmendra, who played the charismatic Veeru, called Sholay the “eighth wonder of the world.” Recalling his favourite scenes — from the water tank sequence to Jai’s emotional death — the veteran actor expressed his joy at the film being restored for global audiences, saying, “I’m sure it will have the same impact it did 50 years ago.”

Behind the Restoration: A Labor of Love

Shivendra Singh Dungarpur, founder of the Film Heritage Foundation, emphasized the challenges involved in restoring the film. Despite the loss of the original 70mm print and negative, the team worked meticulously to revive every frame, sound, and detail — ensuring authenticity and cinematic grandeur.

This premiere at Il Cinema Ritrovato — a festival known for showcasing classic, forgotten, and restored films — will take place in the open-air Piazza Maggiore, with thousands of cinephiles from around the world expected to attend.

What to Expect in the Restored Version

  • Uncut footage never seen before in theatres
  • Original ending with Thakur’s revenge scene
  • Enhanced visual and sound quality without compromising on the film’s vintage essence
  • Deleted sequences that provide more context and emotional weight to the narrative

Legacy of Sholay: A Film That Changed Indian Cinema

More than just a blockbuster, Sholay introduced new storytelling techniques, character archetypes, and cinematic ambition to Bollywood. From Salim-Javed’s legendary dialogues to Ramesh Sippy’s visionary direction, every element of the film became iconic.

Every character — whether it was Jai, Veeru, Basanti, or even the terrifying Gabbar Singh — etched their way into pop culture. And now, after five decades, the Sholay restored version promises to rekindle the magic for both old fans and first-time viewers.

The Sholay restored version isn’t just a re-release — it’s a celebration of cinematic heritage. As it premieres in Italy this Friday, June 27, Indian cinema takes a proud leap onto the world stage once again. For those who grew up quoting its lines or watching it on loop, this is a golden opportunity to witness Sholay in its most complete and powerful form ever.
