Thiruvananthapuram, June 25 (IANS) The standoff between the Kerala government and Raj Bhavan over the use of the ‘Bharat Mata’ picture in official functions at the Governor’s residence is likely to deepen as the Vijayan-led cabinet has decided to send an official communique to Governor Rajendra V. Arlekar.
The cabinet, which has taken the issue seriously, on Wednesday decided that Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan will write an official letter to Arlekar about their difference of opinion on the picture. So far, two state ministers have criticised Raj Bhavan’s use of the Bharat Mata image, alleging it resembles one associated with the RSS. Governor Arlekar has, however, dismissed the observations, saying that there was no problem with the image. The CM’s letter will explain the problem with the image of the Bharat Mata that is used in events at the Governor’s residence, as it does not come under the Constitutionally accepted images, and hence, the one being used cannot be placed in official government functions.First, it was State Agriculture Minister P. Prasad who raised his finger at the picture and refused to attend the event at the Governor’s residence.A few days later, state Education Minister V. Sivankutty, while attending the function of the Scouts and Guides, in his speech expressed his ire and, after ending his speech and walked out of the event. The Raj Bhavan expressed displeasure and said Sivankutty had come prepared as he was reading from a written note and did not wait for the customary National Anthem, which brings the function to a close. It also said that guests walk out only after the Governor leaves. The BJP has launched a scathing attack on the Pinarayi Vijayan-led Left government and those who have opposed it.The Congress party has also attacked CM Vijayan, questioning his silence over the issue. With CM Vijayan breaking his silence and the letter to reach Raj Bhavan soon, all eyes are on the reply from Arlekar.–IANSsg/dpb

Agartala, June 25 (IANS) Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha said on Wednesday that the Union Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) Ministry has already sanctioned Rs 198 crore for setting up a special drug de-addiction centre at the state’s Sepahijala district in Bishramganj.
Speaking at an event organised on the occasion of International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, the Chief Minister said that the state government has already decided to set up drug de-addiction centres in all the eight districts of the state, with Rs 20 crore would be spent for each of the centre. Chef Minister Saha, who holds both the Home and Health and Family Welfare department portfolios, said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah have already directed to adopt zero-tolerance policy against illegal drug trafficking and all kinds of drug menaces. During the financial year 2024-2025, seizure of drugs increased by 103 per cent and destruction of seized drugs increased by 132 per cent, he added. The Chief Minister said that Tripura, which shares a 856-km border with Bangladesh, is surrounded on three sides by the neighbouring country, making the northeastern state vulnerable and sensitive to cross-border smuggling of drugs. “Due to the strategic location of Tripura, the state is being used as a corridor to carry out illegal drug trafficking,” he noted. Being a drug menace and its abuse is one of the causes of rising cases of HIV/AIDS, the Chief Minister urged all concerned to undertake a massive campaign against the contagious disease. He said that many steps, including formation of Red Ribbon Club (RRC) in each school, have been taken to curb the spread of HIV/AIDS. The RRC is a movement initiated by the Indian government in educational institutions to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS among the youth. Chief Minister Saha, who also holds the Education department portfolio, said that sex education must be inculcated among the children so that they would be aware about various ill-effects of uncontrolled sex. Tripura Director General of police, Anurag, while addressing the event, said that last year various drugs, including highly addictive methamphetamine tablets and ganja (marijuana) worth Rs 800 crore, were seized and destroyed in Tripura. Tripura Chief Secretary J.K. Sinha and senior officials of the Narcotics Control Bureau addressed the gatherings. –IANS sc/khz

Jaipur, May 13 (IANS) In the wake of rising tensions along the India-Pakistan border and the launch of Operation Sindoor, the Rajasthan administration has imposed a complete ban on the use of Pakistani local SIM cards in Jaisalmer district, following a similar decision in Sriganganagar.
The step has been taken to curb potential security threats and prevent misuse by terrorist organisations. Jaisalmer district collector Pratap Singh stated that Pakistani SIM cards pose a significant risk, as they can be exploited by terror groups for communication and coordination. “In the interest of national security, the use of Pakistani SIM cards is now completely banned in Jaisalmer with immediate effect,” he said.Telecom service providers have been instructed to block Pakistani network signals in the border areas. The district administration has appealed to local residents, especially those living in border villages, to comply strictly with the order and to report any suspicious activity immediately. Ahmedabad, May 13 (IANS) Ahmedabad City Police Commissioner G.S. Malik made it mandatory for all rickshaw drivers to install functional meters from January 1, 2025. However, despite clear orders and a grace period, enforcement has revealed widespread non-compliance. So far, the city’s traffic police have penalised 28,112 rickshaw drivers operating without meters, collecting a staggering Rs 1.56 crore in fines.
The crackdown follows mounting public complaints about rickshaw drivers allegedly charging inflated fares, especially during peak hours or in high-demand areas. Commissioner Malik said, “There were repeated complaints that rickshaw pullers were charging more than the standard fare. We had given them until January 1 to install meters. Now, if a rickshaw is found operating without a meter, a fine is issued. After the second violation, we will treat it as a permit breach, and the rickshaw will be detained.” The Commissioner further appealed to all rickshaw owners and drivers to comply with the regulation to avoid penalties and legal action. “During annual RTO renewals, meters are provided, but many drivers choose to leave them at home. This cannot continue,” he emphasised. The decision, officials say, was driven by concerns raised by daily commuters who often felt exploited by arbitrary fare demands. With the new rule in place, passengers are now expected to pay only the metered fare, helping standardise pricing across the city. Auto rickshaws are a crucial part of Gujarat’s urban transport network, serving as an affordable and accessible mode of travel for millions of people daily.According to the Gujarat RTO data, there are over 3.5 lakh registered auto rickshaws across the state, with the highest concentration in cities like Ahmedabad, Surat, Vadodara, and Rajkot. These three-wheelers play a significant role in local mobility, especially for last-mile connectivity in congested city areas and rural outskirts.–IANSjanvi/dan
