A 17-year-old boy was brutally hacked to death by a five-member gang near the vehicle parking area close to the iconic Meenakshi Amman Temple in Madurai. The incident occurred during the early hours of Monday, causing shockwaves in the city and raising concerns about violent crimes involving young individuals.
Police have arrested all five accused, including a youth identified as Muthumani, in connection with the murder. Preliminary investigations suggest that a long-standing rivalry, stemming from an altercation during the recent Chithirai festival celebrations, may have led to the attack.
The victim was sleeping at the Madurai Corporation-owned vehicle parking facility near the temple premises when the gang, armed with sickles and sharp weapons, allegedly entered the area. The attack took place at dawn when the victim was alone, with the assailants surrounding him and launching a sudden assault with deadly weapons.
The teenager sustained severe injuries and succumbed on the spot before any intervention could occur. Following information from local residents and passersby, police rushed to the scene, secured the area, and later recovered the body for a post-mortem examination at a government hospital.
Senior police officials initiated a detailed investigation, forming teams to trace the accused swiftly. Investigators identified the suspects based on initial evidence and local inputs, leading to the subsequent arrest of all five individuals allegedly involved in the murder. It was revealed during questioning that the victim and Muthumani had a previous clash during the Chithirai festival celebrations, indicating a possible revenge motive.
Police suspect that the earlier dispute escalated into a revenge attack, with the deceased boy reportedly having multiple criminal cases registered against him. Authorities are exploring whether other disputes or gang rivalries contributed to the murder, and further investigations are ongoing to determine the complete sequence of events and any additional individuals involved in planning or facilitating the attack. Security measures in the area have been heightened following the incident.
