The self-enumeration phase of the 2027 census kicked off in Maharashtra on the state’s foundation Day. This phase will run from May 1 to May 15, 2026, followed by house listing and housing Census from May 16 to June 14, 2026, with enumerators conducting door-to-door visits. Caste details will be part of the Population Enumeration phase.
Union Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment Ramdas Athawale highlighted the importance of the caste census in aiding government support for each caste. Athawale urged citizens to participate in the census, emphasizing the significance of understanding Maharashtra’s and the country’s population through this process.
Athawale noted the expansion of the census to include caste and religion data, beyond just Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes. He explained that this broader census approach will provide insights into caste demographics, employment rates, agricultural involvement, poverty levels, and housing status for each caste.
The census, conducted digitally for the first time in independent India, aims to enable the government to tailor assistance to different castes based on the gathered data. Athawale and Maharashtra Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule urged citizens to cooperate with census officials and utilize the census portal for accurate data collection.
