A tragic incident occurred at IIT-Bombay as a 21-year-old student, Naman Agarwal, fell from the ninth-floor hostel terrace and lost his life. Naman, a second-year BTech Civil Engineering student from Rajasthan, was found critically injured after allegedly jumping from Hostel No. 4 at around 1:30 am. Despite immediate medical attention, he was declared dead upon arrival at a nearby hospital.
Security guards and fellow students responded to the incident upon hearing a loud noise, discovering Naman with severe injuries on the ground. While Naman resided in Hostel No. 3, the incident unfolded at Hostel No. 4, prompting an investigation by the authorities.
The Powai police have initiated an Accidental Death Report (ADR) into the matter, revealing that no suicide note was recovered from the scene or Naman’s hostel room. Statements from Naman’s friends and hostel mates are being gathered to shed light on the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
Naman’s family in Pilani has been notified, and a post-mortem examination is underway. His untimely demise has reignited concerns about the increasing suicide cases within IIT campuses nationwide.
In the past five years, government data shows that over 35 students have died by suicide across various IITs, highlighting a pressing issue. Recent incidents, such as the suicide of a PhD scholar at IIT-Kanpur in January 2026, underscore the gravity of the situation. Notably, IIT-Bombay had previously experienced a similar tragedy in February 2023 when a student named Darshan Solanki took his own life on campus.
Experts attribute such incidents to various factors like academic stress, competitive atmospheres, separation from family, and career-related anxieties. In response, several IITs have implemented measures such as mental health screenings, enhanced counseling services, restricted rooftop access, and the installation of safety features in hostels.
Despite these efforts, students and mental health professionals advocate for deeper changes in academic culture and more robust emotional support systems to address the root causes of such tragedies.
